Summary
Despite having a room and a building and a city to call home, he could never quite bring himself to unpack entirely. Jess sat up groggily and looked around his tiny bedroom–a twin bed, a small dresser/side table, a thrifted lamp, and a rug. His clothes, shoes, and CDs were stuffed in random boxes and baskets, cluttering up the otherwise bare space. The only things with their own, dedicated shelf were the books—a collection he’d been carefully curating and rebuilding since leaving Connecticut for good.
That was the extent of his worldly possessions.
For the most part, he was okay with that. He’d always traveled light. He even sold his stereo for some extra money and opted for a small portable CD player. He loved that thing more than he loved his own mother. It was practically a security blanket. He looked down at the thing and watched the CD inside spin when he hit “Play.”

Jess Mariano wakes up on an early March morning in Philly and reflects on his life after Stars Hollow. Set in March 2006 just before The Real Paul Anka.

Summary
“I’m going back to the hotel anyway.” Logan insisted. “I got a few rooms cause I didn’t want to go home tonight and face the disappointment on Shira’s pinched, wine-flushed face. Why don’t you follow me there and just crash with us until the morning?”
“Logan—“
“My drunkenness has faded and in its place is unwavering stubbornness. You can’t say no to me.”
“I bet you tell all the girls that.”
“I’ll allow that not-so-thinly-veiled remark if you just come back with me and crash for a few hours.”

The summer before his second year at Yale, Marty Cassidy bartends a party for Logan Huntzberger and his snobby friends. A long night of drinking, arguments, and surprising vulnerability follows.

"What’s your favorite Christmas movie?” Rory asked.
“I don’t have one.”
“What? You have to! Everyone has a favorite Christmas movie.”
Jess shrugged, adjusting the large paper bag in his arms. “Not me.”
“I don’t believe you! You must have one.”
“I really don’t.”
“Come on, Jess. I was deprived of you for almost every Christmas until now. I need to know! It’s for science.”
“Oh, well, if it’s for science, I guess I can oblige.”
--
Due to an unforseen winter weather event, Jess and Rory spend the Christmas holiday in New York.

Summary
Pure rage flowed through his veins. Apathy was a good enough disguise most of the time, but anger bubbled beneath the surface almost constantly. It left him unstable and on-edge, desperate to keep moving, or else, unleash the full, unbridled power of his wrath on someone who didn’t deserve it.
Now, he was doing just that. Now, he was pissing his life away just because.
Now, he had nothing but the open road and the noise.

Or, what happened when Jess Mariano left.

Summary
“Hey, Jess?” Rory asked quietly.
“What?”
“Are you okay?”
He stopped, turning to face her. “What do you–?”
“Jess…your mom.”
He swallowed thickly. “I’m—I’m managing.”
Her pained face gave her worry away. “How bad was it tonight?”
“Somewhere between totally normal and fucking terrible. I’m not at ‘I wanna slit my throat in front of her,’ though, so I’d call that a big improvement.”
“Anything I can do?”
“Just…keep being you, Gilmore. You keep me planted on this Earth pretty firmly."
--
Jess and Rory go back to Stars Hollow for Thanksgiving. They visit their old haunts and reminisce. Jess reconnects with his little sister, Doula.

Melissa woke up to her phone ringing, she turned over to look at her alarm clock.
3:15 am.
Who was calling this late at night, or early in the morning? She grabbed her phone and squinted her eyes. The screen read “Frank”. Her co-worker at the ER. She answered and in a tired voice she mumbled.
“Hello?”
“Mel?” Frank’s voice was heavy, like he was worried about something. “Were you sleeping? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you–”
“Frank, are you okay? Something sounds wrong.”
“Uhm, can you come over? I don’t think I can be alone right now. I don’t know how to explain it, but-”
“I’ll be over.”
Frank Langdon is struggling and calls the only person he can think of, Mel, to help.

I don't even know what to say, except read this fic when you're in the throes of a late-night sob fest over the one that got away, when you know you're the one who mostly fucked it up in the first place. Or be a big dumb baby like me and read the entire beautiful thing in its entirety and cry silently in the middle of the workday. Either works.
