Rebecca wasn’t just a rookie. She was smaller than anyone else STARS in every possible way, she was younger than anyone else by years— when not by decades— and she likely had less practical life experience than anyone else even her own age.
In every way it seemed… Felt like she was the squirrel in the wooden wolf mask.
Well, every way except her intelligence.
Rebecca knew that was the sole reason STARS had chosen her over any other applicants. In every other way she was a mere liability to the force, but in the terms of her intelligence it was likely she was unrivalled— even among the likes of her peers, her intellect seemed to be greater. Perhaps she would be unknowledgeable in a few fields the others would be experts in, but Rebecca knew her knowledge of biochemistry was unmatched for one for her age.
While she had something to help justify her being in STARS, Rebecca still felt a swallowing, unending need to prove herself, to show that bringing her on wasn’t a mistake, to prove that she could do well despite herself.
And this is how she would start.
