The move to Dodge City came on a whim, though some might be inclined to call it fate.
Doc had never put much stock in such notions. However, he had to admit, it had not previously crossed his mind to leave Georgia. He certainly had not planned to relocate to an up and coming cattle town. The decision came together all at once—a stroke of genius or madness, he dared not guess—from the prompt of a visiting patron.
“I surely needed your help,” the man said, rubbing at his previously aching cheek. “Wish we had a dentist like you back in Dodge.”

It was Newt’s fault, God love him.
Nobody had ever bothered testing the drift compatibility of Lieutenants Kazansky and Mitchell—callsigns Iceman and Maverick. The two of them had come up through Jaeger training together, graduated from the same class, and command had heard the stories. They’d read the disciplinary reports. They’d been informed that the two of them could do almost anything except cooperate with each other.
Which was a shame, since they both tested off the charts in practically every aspect of Jaeger pilot training. They were potentially two of the best Jaeger pilots in the world, but they couldn’t get along to save their lives.
Or, command worried, anyone else’s.
And that was what they were dealing with—saving lives. The whole world counted on the Jaeger program to push back the Kaiju threat. The robotic initiative stood between the monsters and the rest of the world. So they didn’t test Ice and Maverick. Why would they? If those two could actually see what each thought of the other, it would end in bloodshed. Neither of them might make it out alive.
At least, that was what command thought.

Ice clenches his jaw like he’s so frustrated having to spell it out. “Mitchell. Stop it. I know. And it’s fine. It’s not the first workplace crush I’ve dealt with. But we both know this,” Ice gestures between them with a doubtful grimace. “It’s not healthy.”
Wait. What?
“Workplace…crush,” Maverick repeats, stuck on the words, mental gears turning in slow, rusty clicks as he plays back the conversation. Ice accused Maverick of being more interested in him than Amy. Maverick thought he meant as a rival, a sparring partner. But he meant romantically? That can’t be right.
“Stop it,” Ice says with a roll of his eyes like he thinks Maverick is messing with him. “There’s no point denying it. You like me.”
Maverick stares at him with his mouth agape, unable to formulate words. The struggling gears in his mind have ground to a halt.
“It’s really obvious, man,” Ice continues, tone softening. “You’re like a kid with puppy love. You’re always trying to get under my skin, get my attention. It’s flattering, in a way. But I’ll pass."
“You think I like you?”

The coffee hit Maverick’s twisted stomach hard. He had nothing to say for himself. He couldn’t excuse it. He couldn’t explain it. Ice would see that he’d disengaged when Ice was calling for help, and he’d remember. He’d remember why he hated Maverick.
The enemy’s dangerous, but you’re worse.
And he’d be right. All those times Ice called Maverick out at Top Gun, and Maverick had proven it for him.
