The wound near the small of his back from the ballista shots throbs dully, and the filthy rag he'd hastily tied around his thigh is doing next to nothing. A little longer, and he'll start blacking out too: he can already see the heralds of it — thousands of tiny, coloured sparks before his eyes, flaring and shifting and assembling into a motley kaleidoscope. The sickly gold glow of the old City of Gods.
He was dying — and so was Ragnvaldr, lying right beside him.

Summary
Cahara of the South, mercenary extraordinaire, ventured to the Dungeons of Fear & Hunger for one reason alone: to bring back a sizeable bounty on a man called Le'Garde. Money, after all, was meant to solve all the world's (and his) problems. He refuses to acknowledge that he may have other, more complex reasons for being there. Notably, he didn't bargain on getting captured by prison guards, nor the lengths to which he'd have to go to survive. Rescued by an odd scruffy outlander known only as Ragnvaldr, they both realise they seek the same quarry.
