An unexpected notification caught his eye. It was from a certain Straw-Hat. Not a saved contact, so the app was showing just the nickname.
Law stared at the notification, wondering who this Straw-Hat person was–and why they’d sent him a photo?The preview was hidden, of course.
He could’ve done so many things, like just ignoring the message and moving on with his life. But the truth was that Law was dying inside to know what the mysterious photo was showing. Usually, when unknown contacts messaged him, it was for class notes or uni-related stuff. This was new.
He hovered his finger over the notification for a second longer before tapping it and letting the chat open. -

Luffy started to hum a peaceful tune. It was a soft whisper. Calm. Gentle.
The soft humming brought ease to Law’s poor damned soul. Every note found the right place inside of his mind, even the more dissonant notes seemed to settle. And as each sound found its right place, fitting perfectly inside of him. The melody curled through his mind, filling the space he hadn’t known was empty. Something was surfacing, pressing against the edges of his thoughts, waiting to break through. And Law didn’t want to hold back anymore. -

“There’s no shame in admitting you got hurt, Torao” said Luffy with his usual kindness “I think that admitting it will make you look very brave”
“I have no interest in looking brave in your eyes” Law cut-off, returning his gaze on his crew. Watching them made him feel save, like nothing could’ve gone wrong in that moment. It was a strange feeling it wasn’t the usual relaxation he felt in seeing them happy. It was more like the feeling of a mother feels when she sees her child doing okay…or something like that. Law couldn’t understand it very well. -

“I WAS. Long time ago, I’m not anymore”, and as a reminder to why he wasn’t a pirate anymore Law brought again his hand on his belly and his gaze on his daughter, “I have responsibilities now”, his voice was low and the tone bittersweet. He would’ve loved to feel that free again, sail on a ship and go away, but his children were his responsibility…and he needed Doflamingo’s protection now. He did very bad things in his pirate’s years and the marines were just waiting for him to came out again to claim his head. Yes, he tried to runaway many times and one just few hours ago, but maybe he tried because deep down he always knew to be destined to failure and so there was never really the risk for him to succeed and be out of Doflamingo ‘protection’. He felt like a bird imprisoned in a golden cage. -
