Summary
“Oh, Viktor,” Jayce says, voice wobbling, and pulls him into a crushing embrace. His heart pounds against Viktor’s chest. Viktor’s eyes burn immediately, and he squeezes them shut as the yawning cavern of despair lances open within his chest. He curls his arms around Jayce’s neck, selfishly drawing him closer and grabbing great handfuls of his tattered tailcoat. The pressure around his ribs is grounding. It pulls him back from that ledge, back into his body, back into Jayce’s.
After a brush with the end of the world, Jayce and Viktor find themselves alive—and, more importantly, together. Spit out among flowering hills, they must learn how to leave behind all that they know, forgive each other and themselves, and live anew in the wake of tragedy.

Summary
Jayce's hand finds Viktor’s shoulder, because of course it does, it always does. “Hey, uh…we could always go back to mine for a bit to decompress? I have some of that wine you like.”
Any other day, Viktor would have accepted without hesitation. Jayce is his best friend in the world, after all, and they’ve done this exact thing a million times. But tonight has been a lot, and he’s not sure that he has any strength left in him to get tipsy on Jayce’s couch and still swallow down the urge to taste the wine on his lips.
Yes, please, Says Viktor’s heart. I love you. Let’s hang out tonight.
Viktor gives Jayce a little smile. “Maybe tomorrow.”

He fetches the thermometer from the bathroom. It chirps cheerily as Jayce presses it to Viktor’s ear.
Viktor measures in at 101.7. He stares at the reading blankly for a moment, sighs, and promptly continues to argue anyway.

It's cold and flu season on the campus of Piltover University, and Viktor is down for the count with the dreaded Campus Cough. Jayce makes soup about it. -

Summary
The sun rises too early during Akaza’s showdown at the Mugen train, and he retreats to the shadows before he can finish Kyojuro off. “… incinerated my prototypes,” he is saying as Viktor watches him; half-conversational, half-explanatory. “A few times, actually, by now. It’s like cat and mouse: I make them, they incinerate them … I don’t think they ever realised I had any other crystals or they’d definitely incinerate those, too.”
“Bastards,” Viktor says, seriously.
Jayce grins up at him again. “Yeah,” he says, “bastards. The whole lot.”
They look at each other oddly, both blinking. Then Jayce grins again, as though he is in on some sort of great joke that only the two of them are privy to. For the first time in a very long time, Viktor feels very aware of his mask standing between the world an his face.
Perhaps the cooling system is clogged again. He feels oddly warm.
Or: Zaunite shut-in Viktor hides in his lab and behind his mask, until a tipsy Academy drop-out stumbles into his life on a reckless gander into the Undercity. Something blooms.

Summary
After it's all said and done, Jayce and Viktor wake up on the other side — lost in the middle of a thick, vibrant jungle. They're together. They're alive. They should be happy. But Viktor’s connection to the Arcane isn't making things easier. Every time he sleeps, Viktor teleports them somewhere else; to a new continent, a far off star, a trap in the high seas, further and further away from home.
What seems like the end is just the beginning.

Viktor felt, for a second, somewhat sated. This was not the life he had dreamed of, but only because he had, on some level, not really expected to have a life to dream about. He had a comfortable job, a kind employer, he had more time than he ever really expected to read, to study, to learn. He had, of course, a yearning for something more, but while their travels interrupted his personal experiments, they also funded them. He could imagine a better world for himself, and simultaneously accept the hand he had been dealt, as much as he disliked it.
None of this was new—they were the facts of his life.
But after that feeling of being sated came another. Something deep, twisted, terrifying, awful. There was no evidence to support it, only a sensation across his fingers, down the back of his neck, clutching at his chest.
Something—and he was not sure what—was about to change, it said.
