What didn’t hurt was that Tanjiro got a girlfriend, what really broke Zenitsu was that Tanjiro would share more of himself, a side of himself that Zenitsu would never know, to someone else; that that lucky person would become treasured, precious and invaluable in Tanjiro’s heart, more so than any other person.
What stung Zenitsu was not jealousy,
It was rejection. Objective, severe, coal-black rejection.
But despite knowing this, Zenitsu squashed the notion that it might be love, that the bubbling bitterness in his throat meant that he was scared of being replaced. Zenitsu knew that love was a slippery slope, that ended in misery.
Love makes you vulnerable. Love makes you go crazy. Love is dangerous. Love was a tender fire, with soft flames and radiating warmth. It was life. Love was a matter of life, but if you go too close, try to reach or grasp the flames too much, you’ll get burned.And Zenitsu, the ever-loving fool, got burned and burned and burned.
Or in which Tanjiro gets a girlfriend, Zenitsu is jealous and it takes a life or death situation for these two boys to finally man up.

If Zenitsu had to describe himself, one word would be enough.
Unremarkable.
Sadly, when Inosuke signs him up as the friend in a "pitch a friend" matchmaking event, Zenitsu needs to come up with five good things to say about himself, or risk Inosuke pitching him as "a crybaby that can eat an entire cake in ten minutes. A big one, meant for six people."

The newest Hashira was an oddity and a mystery. Only a few years older than Muichiro, but seemingly so much more a child. Loud and displeasing to the ear, crying and wailing constantly, Giyuu didn’t understand how a coward such as Agatsuma Zenitsu could have ever reached a rank such as theirs, particularly without even so much as a shred of evidence regarding his skill.
It was one of the very few things he and the other Hashira distinctly agreed upon. The boy did not belong. He was unfit to be a slayer, a protector. The boy was a liability, and now, every day he would disappear, up into the mountains of the prefecture they were in, in the middle of winter with Demons supposedly about.
In search of coal of all things.
