Work Text:
If there was one thing in the entire world L really wanted right now was get that bastard Kira into prison.
L assigned the task force to work on their own personal investigations to avoid even more arguments between them then there already was. The task force was a bit suspicious of why investigations were made personal. L, however, had his own reasonings for every action he took.
So what does he do after this separation between the task force? He stalks teenagers even though he knows no matter how many descriptions he looks through his point will always stand: Light Yagami is Kira. It’s so simple that it’s exhausting to try to explain.
Whilst he was trying to investigate teenagers in the Kanto Region of Japan to “narrow” his suspects down, which is actually just him trying to find out further proof of Light Yagami being Kira…he seemed confused.
The answer was in front of him the whole time. What was stopping him? He was the world's greatest detective, he could just send Light to jail immediately in the blink of an eye but why was this strange barrier separating everyone from the truth?
The thing is that L knew the truth. He’s known the truth since the awakening of Kira’s presence. He’s known since he’s laid eyes on Light.
L hadn’t had fun playing a game like this in so long. It added an excitement so indescribable it felt electric. Light knew every move L was going to make and L knew every move Light was going to make. Light's charming and slightly addictive behaviour draws L closer to him everyday. His smile, his charismatic manner and his soothing voice—even if it all was a sad facade, L wanted to cling on to him. He wanted to cling onto the fact that he may not be Kira. That he had found somebody. His somebody.
He wished that they could’ve met differently. Even though he knew that there may never be a world where Light and L could’ve met better, he still holds onto the idea that they could live.
L sitting down on his temporary bed with a laptop slightly burning on his lap, he hovered his mouse onto Light’s profile again and pressed.
What he felt for him couldn’t be reduced to some words. A connection so deeply embedded into his heart.
A knock thudded and Light came in. L placed his laptop down and shut it down. They stared at eachother. Light’s face was rosy and his eyes looked more brown than red like it usually does. Even if it seems like a lighting trick, he seemed softer like Kira was beginning to fade away.
“Ryuzak—I just wanted to let you know that since we’re parting ways soon…I‘ll miss you” He jumped down on the bed facing L.
Every word he spoke rolled off his tongue like it was natural. Every lie he uttered was so natural he felt almost as if he was born to feel the electric ease of lying. Almost natural. L was the only person who saw through his disguise he played for himself. The disguise he kept up with for so long.
He didn’t answer. He grabbed by his neck and pulled him in. Light poured into a dual hug.
There was a thick silence between. An unbearably suffocating silence stretching.
“Light—is this the only way we could’ve met?”
Light didn’t immediately answer as he did. Instead he tugs L’s hair with his hands and digs into his collarbone.
“I don’t know.”
“I wish we could’ve met in another way.” He chuckled. He really chuckled.
He was expecting Light to reply in his same snarky tone. His disguise was slipping the day they had to part ways.
“I think that—this is the only way we could’ve met.”
L’s breath hitched up and he began to cry. “Light. Are you Kira?”
There was no answer this time. The tension hung high between them and their distance began to grow even with their skin touching.
And that was all L needed to know.
