Flickered Glances and Timid Touches

Summary:

Addison Darnell and Harper Grayson have only heard negative things about each other from friends, but have never spoken. Until one lesson with a substitute teacher gives Harper the confidence to step out of her comfort zone and find out what this girl is really about. Her “friends” hate it of course, but at this point she doesn’t really care, she knows her friends aren’t really friends anyway…

Chapter 1: How long is this day gonna be?

Chapter Text

September, Thursday morning, double period, substitute. What could go wrong? everything.  Addison found herself sitting on a table by herself, of course, until one of the girls in her Class came over. She was slightly shorter than Addison, with longer, darker hair and dark eyes. Addison knew this girl, not personally; she was quite popular in the School, god knows why.

“Can I sit here?” This was a surprising question to come from a girl she didn’t even know, but she said yes anyway.

Addison noticed small details about her as she sat down, small things that made her question how this girl got in with the popular kids. She wasn't tanned or bottled blonde; she was just…her own. She set her book in front of her; beautifully written was her name, Harper Grayson, written across the front.

For being year 10’s, you’d think they were in a year 8 lesson. The substitute didn’t care what was going on; the boys were throwing everything they could get their hands on, and absolutely no work was done.  Addison, on the other hand, managed to start a conversation with Harper. From what Addison had been told, Harper was, in simple terms, a mean girl, but she said nothing mean the whole hour. The boys, however…

“Oi, Harps! You hanging out with Lesbos now?” one of the boys shouted from across the room. There was no response from the sub, of course.

Harper just rolled her eyes; she clearly didn’t have the energy to respond. Addison did.

“You upset I’m a lesbian, or the fact that I’ve been with more women than you?” Addison asked without looking at him, getting a small laugh from Harper. He didn't respond, but “ooh!”’s came from his friends.

“That was overly confident,” Harper whispered to Addison. “Just part of who I am,” Addison whispered back.

The class continued with the same chaos, with Addison and Harper still in their own world, drawing, passing notes.

Near the end of the lesson Addison passed one last note, ‘@addi.darnel-my snap :) (if you want it, of course)’. Harper’s lips formed a small smile before looking at Addison, “Sure.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
At lunch Addison was sitting with her friend group on the field, when she started checking her phone notifications. The top notification was ‘harper.grace set you a friend request, add them back and say hi!’. Addison tapped on the notification and accepted the request.
Addi: heyyyy
Harps: hi
Addi: You alright?
Harps: Yeah... trying to avoid talking to people by being on my phone.
Addi: Where are you? We can inconveniently walk around together before lesson
Harps: canteen, sure...
Harps: Also, where did you learn to use inconveniently?
Addi: Are you assuming I don't pay attention in English, so I can't be using that word?!
Harps: yes
Addi: Well, you're wrong!
Harps: I don't believe you.
Addi: It's the truth!
Harps: uh hu
Addi: Fine... Sasha told me.
Harps: of course
Addi: That girl is a human dictionary. Leave me alone!
Harps: lol
Addi: Anyway! What lesson do you have?
Harps: maths... I don't wanna go..
Addi: I have pshe :(
Addi: Meet me in toilets? We can wander around before we get to lesson.
Harps: Alright.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Addison put her phone back in her bag and stood up to leave.

"Where you going?" Erin spoke up.

"To take a piss, twat." Addi responded. Erin faked a shocked look, Addison shook her head and walked away.

When she got to the toilets, Harper was already there, fixing a curl in her hair. Addison had never exactly believed in love at first sight, but there was something about Harper that she couldn’t explain; like everything else in the world stopped, and it was just her… Harper noticed Addi behind her in the mirror, but she didn’t look at her.

“You’re staring…” was all she said.

Addi looked at Harper’s eyes in the mirror before quickly looking down, “Sorry…”

“Don’t worry, I’m not one of those girls who thinks lesbians are into every woman they’ve ever looked at.”
