Chapter 1: Pruning a rose

Chapter Text

Weiss yawned as she stretched her arms out. It was a beautiful day today as the sunlight shone through her window past the ivory drapes and onto her large bed.

'I have a feeling it's going to be a good day today' weiss thought as she lifted the comforter off of her and got out of bed. The cold tile was cool to the touch as she walked over to her dresser. She pulled out her school clothes before bringing them to the bathroom where she set them down by the sink.

She looked in the mirror and saw the scar running down her left eye. She sighed as she went to the shower and turned the hot water on. Steam filled the room as she undressed herself and her clothes fell to the floor before she went into the shower. The hot water slightly burned her skin so she lowered the temperature until it was just right. She squeezed out some vanilla shampoo from the nearly empty bottle before washing her hair and rinsing it.

She quickly felt at her chest and took note of her lack of growth there. She was eighteen years old now and still felt like she hasn't grown much unlike her friends who changed much in their time at high school. Especially ruby who was now taller than her despite being two years younger. Her mind also went to the other more inappropriate ways Ruby has grown recently. Like her bigger chest that she always found herself staring at when she wasn't looking, her long smooth legs she got to see during gym and what they were connected to, her as-. Weiss shook her head as she stopped her hands from going any lower below her waist. She shouldn't do that while she thinks of her friend Ruby.

Her mind went back to her own lack of growth, would she ever look like her sister Winter or would she stay this way?

After finishing washing up she got dressed and tied up her hair in an off-center ponytail with a small crown-like hair clip. She looked in the mirror again. Hopefully Ruby notices her today when they see each other. The last time she did she complimented her hair calling it beautiful. She left the bathroom and went downstairs where Klein was serving breakfast to Whitley and her mother. She quietly took her seat so she didn't bother her mother who probably had another hangover. Her brother munched on his toast as Klein refilled his drink. She quietly ate her food until it was time to leave.

She left her large house before walking to the car where Klein was waiting for her and Whitley so he could take them to school.

After they both got in Klein drove off and turned the radio to a classic music channel for Whitley to listen to. soon they arrived at Whitley's school where they dropped him off at the front before driving off.

Klein looked back at Weiss through the rearview mirror before changing the channel to a rock station. Weiss smiled as they drove through the city of Vale. She used to dislike this type of music until Ruby showed her a few songs on her phone one day when they were hanging out and said it was one of her favorite types of music. She grew attached to the songs after that and started listening to them on her own. She smiled at the memory as they came to Weiss' school.

"Here we are," Klein said as he got out of the car and opened up Weiss' door for her.

"Thank you Klein I'll see you later," Weiss said as she exited the vehicle.

"It's My pleasure Weiss" Klein bowed before closing the door behind her and she began walking to homeroom as she did every day. She hoped she could see Ruby when she got there. She desperately wanted to see her crush's cute smile today after having finished so many tests last week. She walked through the halls until she came to her locker. Weiss put in her combination before taking a few heavy books out and closing it. she noticed Sun and Neptune walking by her locker and talking about junk food to each other. She waved to them as she began walking to her homeroom.

When she arrived she noticed that the seat next to her was empty. 'Where's Ruby?' the bell rang and she took her seat with the rest of the students before the teacher came in.

"Hello class," the soft redhead said as she sat behind her desk. Miss Peach quickly took attendance before writing something on the board. Weiss was too distracted by the empty seat next to her to care. Where was the adorable redhead?

After homeroom was over Weiss went to her next class.

"Hey Weiss," Nora said as she walked next to her with Ren's hand interlocked with hers.

"Hello Nora how are you today?" She watched the happy couple as they walked to class.

"Happy! me and Ren have a date later today" She hugged the stoic boy before kissing his cheek causing him to blush. weiss was glad her friends had such a loving relationship.

Would she and Ruby be like that if they got together?

As they entered the classroom the couple separated before taking their seats. Weiss sat down and waited for professor port to enter the classroom. He was a few minutes late but immediately went into the lesson before going off on a tangent about wrestling a shark. Still no Ruby today. She noticed Ruby's seat was empty in this class too. Maybe she was absent today.

After class was over she went to her next class where Ruby was also missing. Her seat was vacant along with the seat that had been empty for a year by now. She tried not to think about that as she took notes for her third class.

soon it was lunch time and Weiss put away her books before heading to the lunchroom. She stopped when she noticed Ilia walking through the halls. She quickly walked up to the girl before tapping her shoulder. She was surprised at first but her expression soon turned sour after she noticed who it was.

"What do you want Weiss?" Ilia looked annoyed having to talk to her. She knew Ilia didn't like her family but she still considered the girl a friend because of Blake even if she didn't feel the same way.

"Have you seen Ruby today? She hasn't been in any of our classes and I don't know if she called in sick today"

Ilia thought for a moment before answering. "No I haven't and Blake didn't tell me if she was sick today" She stopped for a moment before speaking. "I actually haven't seen Blake or her girlfriend today either"

Blake and Yang were missing too? Weiss thanked Ilia before walking to the lunch room. After getting her lunch she sat at her usual table with Coco and Velvet. The seats for Ruby, yang, and Blake were empty as she tried to eat her food but she didn't have much of an appetite today.

"Missing your friends huh," coco said as she looked at the empty seats surrounding Weiss. "I would be down too if my bun bun wasn't around either" Coco kissed Velvet on the cheek before leaning on Weiss' shoulder. "They're probably fine Weiss I don't think they would want you to starve yourself though," Coco said as she pointed to Weiss' untouched food.

"Thank you Coco" Weiss said as she began eating her food.

"No problem Weiss" Coco lifted herself off Weiss' shoulder before leaning on velvet and hugging her.

Lunch ended then her next classes went by without much happening. She couldn't stop thinking about the red-headed girl. Maybe she should visit her after school. See if she's doing okay. Maybe she should bring a treat like a box of cookies or would that be too much? maybe it would give away her feelings about her.

"Miss Schnee enough daydreaming" Oobleck called on the heiress. "Now answer the question" Oobleck pointed to the board. Weiss sighed before answering. "Thank you miss schnee" Oobleck turned around and began writing down a new problem for the class to solve.

At the end of the day weiss left the school and walked up to the car Klein was driving. Whitley was already in the car waiting for her to get in.

"Hurry up we're going to be late to get home because of you. And if Dad starts yelling again-" Weiss slammed the door behind her before turning to her brother.

"I get it shitley" Weiss teased her younger brother with the nickname he hated hearing.

"Haha, very funny ice queen" Whitley shot back at her. Weiss hated that name ever since she was little. They stared at each other until Klein cleared his throat and started driving away from the school.

When they arrived home Whitley was the first one out and into the house.

"How are you feeling Weiss," Klein said as he sat in the front seat.

"I'm fine, it's just, my friends weren't at school today and I missed them" Klein nodded as he left the vehicle and opened the door for Weiss.

After they went into the house Weiss saw her father leaving the living room and walking into his study. the scar on her eye burned as the memory of how she got it started to come back the more she thought of her father. She shook her head as the doors closed behind him and she quickly went to her room.

She closed the door behind her before putting her back against it and sliding down the door. She pulled her knees to her chest as she stayed there for a moment thinking. She really missed Ruby right now. She gently ran her fingers over her scar and sighed as she remembered the first time Ruby saw it. She was sad at first before telling her the scar made her look cool, like a warrior from battle. She smiled at the memory from when they were young.

Her phone buzzed in her skirt pocket. She pulled it out and noticed a message from Nora. It was an image attachment. She opened the image and saw it was of Nora and Ren. Nora was in front as Ren hugged her from behind and cat whiskers were drawn on their smiling faces. She smiled at the picture before she got another message. This time it was from Coco. It was a picture of Velvet as she was drinking her coffee in a cafe. Coco titled the picture 'my wife' and sent her a few more messages gushing about how cute her bun bun was. She chuckled to herself as she responded with a few short messages before saying whipped in her final message. Coco sent one more message.

'Just like you are with Ruby' Weiss blushed as she read the message.

'Shut up' she sent before closing the messaging app. She sighed as she thought back to the cute girl. It was her birthday in a few months and Weiss still didn't tell her how she felt.

She thought for a moment about the day and how special it is before deciding she was going to tell Ruby how she felt on her birthday. Just a few more months and she would tell her. The girl she has been in love with since they were kids.

She was really going to do this. her heart thumped in her chest as she opened her images and went to a picture of the red-tipped girl. She smiled at the picture she saw. It was of her and Ruby as they hugged. They both had ice cream in their hands. Ruby smiled while Weiss blushed. She remembered Yang taking the picture while Blake ordered her and Yang ice cream. She loved that memory. She closed the picture before scrolling down to find another cute picture.

She stopped when she scrolled too far and saw an image that she didn't want to see. She opened it and stared at the picture. It was a selfie of her, Ruby, and Penny as they all were in a group hug. Penny's eyes were closed as she kissed Ruby on the cheek. Weiss felt a tear fall down her face as she closed the image. She turned off her phone and saw her reflection. Was it really right for her to tell Ruby how she felt? It has only been a year since those carefree days ended. She got off the floor and went to her desk. She needed to study. She opened her laptop and began working on her homework. Hours passed as she finished her work. When she looked up she saw it was almost sunset.

'I guess it's too late to visit Ruby today I'll visit her tomorrow' Weiss yawned as she closed her laptop and went to her dresser to take out her nightgown. Dinner will be soon then she can take a shower and head to bed. She thought about what she should bring Ruby tomorrow. After thinking she settled on her earlier idea of a box of cookies. She could get them from a bakery or other shop in Vale. She hummed as she layed on her bed and opened her scroll. She opened the search bar of her browser before looking for where to buy cookies. There was a shop not that far away from school. She could ask Coco to drive her there before going to Ruby's place. Although she hasn't visited Ruby's house in months. She missed the small corgi named Zwei and how caring Ruby and Yang's father was unlike her own selfish and uncaring dad.

Maybe one-day Taiyang would also be her father if she and Ruby got married someday. She blushed as she thought about how they would get married, who would propose first, and who would be her maid of honor. maybe velvet? She shook her head as she stopped thinking too far ahead. She hadn't even asked Ruby out yet.

"Ow," she gasped as her phone fell against her face. She was too busy daydreaming to notice her phone was slipping out of her hands before hitting her in the face. She rubbed where it landed and sat up in bed. "That really hurt" she groaned as she got off the bed and wiped a stray tear from her eye.

She huffed as she didn't have anything to do right now so she opened up a video on her phone of one of Ruby's attempts at making what she called a let's play. She really liked these people on the Internet that she called streamers and decided to try it for herself.

She looked full of energy as she played the dark and scary horror game. When a monster appeared she screamed as she ran off in a different direction. Weiss found her terrified screams adorable.

After a while, Ruby was in the vents watching as the monster walked through the halls. She quietly snuck through the vents until it dropped down into a room where there was a lot of blood and guts everywhere. Weiss saw a look she had never seen before on the girl's face as she looked at the mess surrounding her. She watched Ruby mumble something before turning her camera off and ending the video. Weiss thought she saw tears in Ruby's eyes as she turned off the video. She had never seen the girl like that before except for when-. She stopped herself as she heard knocking at her bedroom door.

"Weiss dinner is ready," Klein said from the other side of the door.

"I'll be down in just a minute," Weiss said as she walked over to the door but stopped when her phone started ringing. She saw it was Blake calling her. She hadn't seen her all day so why was she calling now? Weiss answered the phone before pulling it to her ear.

"Blake, I haven't heard from you all day is everything okay?"

"Weiss," Blake said. she sounded tired and exhausted. "No, things aren't okay here. I've been trying to calm Yang down all day but she only fell asleep a few minutes ago. I'm not even sure if she'll stay asleep for long" Blake's throat sounded parched and heavy.

"Why what happened to Yang?" She thought of only one thing Yang could have done that made her upset. "Did she get into another fight again?" There was a pause before Blake answered.

"No it's not yang, it's-, it's ruby" Weiss' heart sank at the mention of something happening to Ruby. She felt worry run through her. There was only one other time Blake was like this.

"What-, what happened to Ruby?" She prepared herself for the worst.

"She's in the hospital. Me and Yang have been here all day watching her. they say she will be fine but-." Blake didn't finish her sentence. Weiss felt her heart plummet as she asked which hospital and what room they were in as she paced in circles.

"I'll come tomorrow as soon as I can Blake I promise" Weiss felt her eyes burn as tears began to form before she sat in her bed waiting for Blake to say anything.

"Okay, weiss I'll see you then" They were about to hang up when weiss had one more question.

"What happened to Ruby?" Blake sighed as she prepared to answer the heiress. When Blake told her why her eyes went wide with horror and the phone she was holding fell onto the floor causing a small crack to form in the screen. Weiss felt tears falling from her face as she quickly grabbed her phone and put on her shoes before running downstairs.

"Weiss, where are you going?" Her mother asked as she walked past her father and brother without noticing them. She came to the front door and her father raised his voice.

"Where are you going at this hour, young lady!" But Weiss didn't care as she opened the door and rushed out of the house. She knew he would probably ground her later but that didn't matter to her as she walked away from the house and got into the front seat of the car before starting it and driving off. She took steadying breaths as she drove down the streets to the hospital. She normally didn't drive herself after what happened last year but that didn't matter as she made her way to the hospital.

After thirty minutes she arrived at the hospital and quickly left the car not caring if it was locked or not. Blake's words repeated as she walked into the hospital until she reached the front desk and asked if she could visit the room Ruby was in. The woman allowed her to go and she quickly ran off to Ruby's room. the words Blake told her repeating in her head the whole way there.

"Weiss, Ruby tried to commit suicide today" Her eyes burned as she finally arrived at Ruby's room and opened the door.

"Weiss, what are you doing here?" Blake said as weiss closed the door behind her and saw Yang curled into Blake's side as they sat on chairs next to Ruby's bed. She ignored Blake as she looked at Ruby who was lying there in bed. Her normal clothes were gone and replaced with a white gown and her forearms were lightly bandaged as the heart rate monitor beeped telling her she was alive. There were other machines there but she didn't know what they did or what they were for.

Weiss quickly went to Ruby's side as her legs gave out and her knees hit the floor hard. She grabbed Ruby's hand as she let her tears fall down her face. What happened to the girl she loved? why did she do this? Will she be okay?

Ruby slowly stirred to life as weiss held her hand tightly. When she opened her eyes she saw Weiss' misty blue eyes staring at her. Trails of tears ran down her face as she looked at the red-tipped girl.

"Weiss?" She said as she sat up in her bed before looking at the older girl. She quickly pulled her hand out of Weiss' before her expression turned serious.

"Why are you here?"
