Who?

Summary:

In all of his life, Tubbo has been nothing but a replaceable side character, a nameless nobody. At the end of his life, he wonders if it's for the best.

Notes:

It's a pretty old story (I wrote it around november I think) but I still kind of like it so I repost it here as well:)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tubbo was used to people pushing him around. He accepted his fate as the nameless "friend", letting people talk down on him and using him as they pleased. He was a simple pawn on a chess board, a figure little to no one cared about, an easily replaceable soldier, a nobody.

He was always there when people needed him, appearing seemingly out of nowhere to offer a big warm hug, a few encouraging words or comfortable silence. He did so much, he tried so hard to blend in, to be one of the crew, to be accepted and loved by the people he adored with all his heart. But hey, you can't have everything you want, right? Being greedy is never a good thing.

When the idea of sending him to Schlatt's place as a spy came up, he was more than happy to comply. He could finally be useful! Maybe if he'll do good, he'll get the love and acceptance he was craving for for so long! A dream coming true, a miracle happening in front of his clear blue eyes, a never returning chance! He had to grab it with all the force his body could possibly offer, embracing it with pure happiness. He greeted the future with open arms, waiting for the warm embrace to come. Who would have though hugs can be cold too?

Schlatt was a man of his kind. Someone with big plans and power in his hands, people behind him to support him from the shadows. People were joking with each other in an affectionate way, and it made the brunette confused. Tubbo never saw anything like this back in his old place where all he got was cold stares and rough words. Tommy who constantly made fun of him because of his childish nature and vulnerability when it came to reading or spelling, Wilbur, who thought of Tubbo as a burden, someone they should have abandoned at the very start, Techno, who always looked at him with disappointment in his eyes when Tubbo lost a fight. In a way, the brunette was glad to be away from them. He enjoyed the freedom that came with his newly gained position, and he embraced it with all he got, enjoying the peace and nature around him.

But with this newly experienced freedom came the crushing reality rather quickly, lowering his mood once again. He didn't belong here either. He was nothing but a small child with little to no power, he had no actual connection with the people around him. He desperately wanted to make new connections, forming new bonds to cherish till the end of the day. He just wanted to belong, to have someone to talk to, to make happy memories together. But no matter how hard he tried, his pleads were never heard, only finding deaf ears and uncomfortable silence. A real tragedy if you ask me. A boy with so much to give without anyone to receive his pure kindness and affection.

When he got a letter from Wilbur, stating their plan to attack Schlatt's base soon, Tubbo was not surprised. He didn't know what to feel honestly, his outgoing, cheerful personality had returned to its shell in the past few weeks. He was dull, anxious and so, so tired. He just wanted to curl up in a ball and never wake up again, living inside his made up false reality with strangers who somehow cared more about his well being than the people surrounding him in real life.

The fact that Schlatt started to be abuse towards him was just the cherry on top. His body was in a state of constant dull, aching pain, making his mind all foggy and weird, he couldn't focus anymore. Tubbo was sure he deserved the punishments he got, but strangely enough he didn't mind them. If he was able to help the other male getting his frustration out, he was fine with the beating and harsh words he got each time. At least the void in his chest was not that unbearably obvious for a few minutes. And hey, he finally got some kind of attention! He was not ignored, he was finally helpful! He started to feel bad for what was about to go down between the two sides.

When he heard the first bombs outside of Schlatt's base, he knew the others were here to take revenge for everything that happened in this long, pointless war. As the fighting begin, he couldn't help but find himself lost in the crowd, confused and strangely enough, scared. What side should he take, what side should he help? What is the right thing to do? Why was he even here?

Guess we'll never find out.

In a blink of an eye, he found himself painfully close to the Blood God himself, his stomach pierced through by the older male's sword. Tubbo stumbled backward as the pinkette roughly pulled out his sword, not even sparing a glance as he ran away, finding a new opponent to fight with. The brunette dropped to his knees, pressing his trembling hands to the stinging would in a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding. Confusion filling his mind as he layed on the dirty ground, eyes half closed. As he gazed towards the battlefield, between swords clicking and dead bodies falling, he heard a muffled shout from the curly haired male.

"Technoblade! You killed Tubbo, you moron!" Wilbur shouted while blocking Quackity's attack, soon charging towards the shorter male with a battle cry.

Tommy and Techno looked at each other, confusion visible on both of their faces.

"Who?"

Tubbo chuckled dryly as he turned to his back, looking at the white fluffy clouds above him with foggy eyes. In the end, he remained a nameless coward, a people pleaser, someone who most likely won't be remembered by anyone. A lost fragment of history, a puzzle piece no one was searching for, a burden all along. Maybe it was for the better.

A teardrop traced his pale face as he started drifting away, feeling the cold embrace agains his skin. It was comforting, he was not scared anymore. He leaned against the kind touch with a small smile on his blood stained face.

Who was he again...?
