Beatrice nods, picking up her pen to resume her monthly auditing only to slam it back down onto the opened notebook. “Seriously?! How many soulmates does one need to have?”
“Only one. But apparently, you have eight so far, nine now, so I’d say it depends.”

"Yes," Beatrice concedes. Her whole body feels tight; she wishes it wasn’t dark, that they weren’t alone, that Ava was safely far away from her again. "One time. Twenty years ago."
"I remember."
Probably not as clearly as Beatrice remembers. "That was different. I was dying. And it was Paris," she adds, like that means anything.
Maybe it does to Ava, who smiles. "I could take you back to Paris."
