Summary
There comes a point in time in which every person just has to suck it the fuck up and deal. Deal with the anxiety and the undeniable self-doubt that comes with being in love with someone. Because yes - it’s fucking scary. It’s terrifying, even, the fact that love can be one-sided. But there’s no way to find out that isn’t just… biting a bullet. So.

Summary
Instead, he got caught up in memories, to the extent he didn’t know if they were real or things he’d imagined to cope. Sometimes though, he forgot what colour Neil’s sweater was, was it deep green or a dirty brown? And then he’d panic, hands shaking and tears threatening to burn his eyes off. Because he couldn’t, wouldn’t allow himself to forget, the sound of his voice, his favourite colour, the way his footsteps sounded, the fucking rhythm of his breath. If he forgot those, nothing would be left. Neil Perry was not a footnote in his story, he was the whole book. He would be.

Summary
It's 1970 when Neil Perry has been gone for 11 years. It's also the winter of 1970 where he comes back into their lives, Charlie teaches everyone how amazing parenting can really be, Knox pines terribly for something so obtainable, and Meeks and Pitts are married (in their terms-never the government's). It's the winter where everything begins and nothing ever ends, and everybody finds their own place at home.

Summary
His room remained untouched weeks after the death of Neil Perry. No one dared go in, see where the boy had left the last fading proof of his existence, no one dared mess up the wrinkled sheets or shut his open window, for weeks the room remained the same.
And for weeks the little carton box labelled “TODD ANDERSON” containing five letters remained unopened, untouched, unnoticed, until box by box the boy’s room got packed away, item by item it emptied, and when the little carton box buried in his drawer caught Mrs. Perry’s eye she thought it ought to reach that boy it was meant for.
