Avery’s head whips up so fast he nearly gets whiplash and stares up at the coffee shop TV tuned to the local news.
“ーafter two days of no contact and multiple missed calls. This comes in light of some recent surveillance footage discovered by investigators which shows men in black arriving at Derek’s home in unlisted vehicles and carrying out a body, whom Derek’s mother has identified as her son. The identities of these men have not yet been determined. Police are urging anyone with information related to the case or Derek’s whereabouts to come forward."
Or: the soul remembers what the mind's forgotten, Derek is alive, the government is up to no good, and Avery really, really isn't prepared to deal with any of that

He doesn’t know why he told Avery his name. Only that it felt right at the time.
Because everything that was about to happen was already set in stone. There was no undoing it, no changing it. Maybe it was the permanence of the things to come, that prompted him to ignore the basic rule of online safety and give up his name.
Or maybe it was simpler than that.
Because for everything he knows about Avery, Avery knows next to nothing about him. And he wanted Avery to have something of hisーsomething he could give away freely and have it mean somethingーif only so Avery had something to hold onto, after everything.
Even if he ends up forgetting all of it.

Why does it feel oddly familiar? Why are the gorilla, the sadist, and Hijikata all sitting on one side of the chabudai—and why is Jimmy going over there to join them?! Now it’s four against one! The odds are stacked against him even before they’ve begun whatever it is that they’re about to begin!
Or: the Shinsengumi collectively give Gintoki their blessing to date their vice chief in typical Gintama fashion, and Gintoki learns the hard way that dating someone means also dating their whole damn family.

Somewhere beneath is all is the urge to laugh.
Enemies of the new country, boxed in by a storm, docked where superstitions come to life. A man with one eye, seeing specters where none exist, at the whim of an old woman who's lost her mind. It sounds like a joke. It's so stupid it's damn near laughable, and the irony would be amusing if he didn't feel like he was the one losing it.
Ghosts are haunting the Kiheitai flagship. Some more obvious than others.

Chuuya knows to expect a difficult mission at the very least when he is summoned to Mori's office one day. He isn't surprised to find Kouyou and Dazai already there, looking as if they were having a pleasant chat over a cup of tea. But the matter at hand is the retrieval of a sensitive piece of data; a job requiring a certain degree of delicacy. It's only when Dazai allows himself to be spirited away by a sleazy business man that Chuuya understands what type of delicacy Mori meant.
Or: shortly after Chuuya joins Portmafia he finds himself in the middle of a metaphorical chessgame between Mori, Kouyou, and Dazai. And for all that Chuuya isn't a chess person, he demands to have a say in what games he's used as pawn in.
