There’d been long minutes trapped in the back of that camper when Eddie had thought he might never get to have this again, and now here they are spilling out of Maddie and Chimney’s house: the four of them around the patio fireplace, the kids playing in the living room, Karen and Maddie mulling cider in the kitchen, Athena and Bobby wandering out in the garden ‘looking at the stars’. It’s good. It feels good.
Eddie just needs to get with the program.

Then he stands, moving carefully around the pain, and bows deep, arms held straight and true.
