Summary
Jess held Lupe close, tried not to let their thoughts circle back to worries of impracticality and risk and overindulgence, pushed away nagging concerns to just appreciate. Maybe that was why they didn’t fully register the intensity of the warmth of their bed, of the heat radiating from Lupe’s skin. Definitely that was why they brushed it off and just pulled the quilt tighter around them when Lupe’s teeth chattered, despite their cocoon of shared body heat.
Looking back, Jess cursed themself for not knowing something was wrong, but in that moment, they had Lupe’s body curled into theirs, Lupe’s face in the crook of their neck, Lupe’s support and companionship in this unforeseen but so treasured trip to Jess’s home. Their headspace was too hazy, too blissful and rose-colored for alarm bells.

after the first few months of the offseason in new york, jess and lupe take a january trip to moose jaw, during which the train travel goes south as lupe falls ill and jess gets hurt. together, they deal with the vulnerability of each being unwell themself and unable to alleviate the other’s pain

Summary
Lupe’s heart warmed when she opened her mailbox to familiar handwriting, to a stamp picturing an obscure bird she didn’t recognize. She would know it soon though; she’d scour the internet for information on this stamped creature joining the collection, for insight into what Jess could be saying through its guardianship in carrying the letter to her.
She knew the video calls would never be Jess’s first choice, and texting never quite captured everything between them, but a letter – It was Jess. Their preferred way of saying, I’m still in this with you.

after lupe’s elbow prematurely ended her career following her third season of pro ball, she unexpectedly received an opportunity to return to the sport in a different capacity
however, there was one big problem, one the size of two whole time zones. the job was in seattle, and jess still played for the peaches. which forced the difficult decision: attempting long distance or parting ways
they decided to try, to figure out how to love in separation, to find how to stay close despite distance. especially because there was a fixed end on the horizon; it was only a two-year contract after all

When the Peaches atypically had to spend three nights all under the same roof, the weekend out of town posed a substantial challenge, both on and off the field. Jess and Lupe, however, faced the additional test of the less-than-ideal predicament they had put themselves in: Nobody knew that, six weeks prior, Lupe had kissed Jess on the couch in their shared apartment, and things had only escalated since. Which meant that, when they walked onto the team bus that Friday morning, not another soul knew the true nature of their relationship. It was going to be a long weekend, especially because they vowed to at least tell Esti the truth
