"Of what?" She mumbles.
"She has packed her belongings and left." For a moment, the world stills. The candlelight, the soft rustle of the maid’s apron—everything suspends. Francesca cannot move. She cannot think. She can only feel the now familiar, suffocating sense of loss settle over her again. Michael too, must think something is broken in her.
On the far edge of the ton, Michaela sits rigidly in her carriage, watching the night sky blur past the window. She wonders whether John is there watching over her.
