Summary
All Dennis wants is a smoke.
He knows—knows!—he isn't supposed to. He's been fighting the urge for the last three weeks, his single battered pack that's kept him company since Nebraska, slowly dwindling away. Soon, he knows, he'll have nothing but the ashen remains of it all, and he doesn't think he's ready for that just yet.
OR: Dennis takes a smoke break, gets punched, and ruminates on the impossibility of desire.

Summary
You heard him let out a deep sigh from behind you and then shuffle around the kitchen. You hear the telltale signs of him pulling down glass containers from the cupboard to put the food away, and something in you snaps.
“I didn't need your help cooking it, I don't need your help putting it away.”
Turning around, you yank the containers out of his hands without a second thought, and start putting your exquisite meal into the cold glass containers to be reheated tomorrow.
“I've had a really long day. It's late and I don't want to fight. Can we just go to bed?”
You stood there for a long second. Still. Silent.
This was your guys' song and dance. Robby would fuck up, you would be sad and alone at home, Robby would coax you to bed with the promise of ‘changing, doing better, talking about it in the morning, fixing everything,’ and by the next morning, you would forget what had transpired the night before, and the cycle would continue.
But not tonight. You were exhausted. You were done.
“I can’t keep living like this. Like everything is okay.”

Summary
AU version of Backward Benton (Season 7, episode 4) where Carter takes a hit following the gang-related shooting in Trauma Room 2, because that’s the kind of luck he has, and the injury presents challenges to his recovery from opioid addiction. His hospital family tries to help him through it but life continues to pile on in the process. Most of what happens in season 7 still happens except Mark never gets a brain tumor because that’s the way I want it so that’s how it shall be. This is the first chapter of eight (or more).
Content Warning: Current/future chapters will touch on addiction, depression, sexual abuse/assault, eating disorders, and suicide. I will add new warning tags as the subjects arise in upcoming chapters.

“What?”
“The pain. I’m not playing this fucking game with you anymore. Where is the pain?” He waited, stared, until finally Dennis’s eyes came up from the floor and locked in on his own. “You’re one of the most driven people I’ve had the pleasure of working with in a long time, Whitaker, and you are off your game in a big way. I’ve seen you sit down more times in the past eight hours than I’ve seen you sit ever. You’re barely eating, you’re dragging ass, and -please excuse how direct I’m being when I say this- you’ve been downright bitchy the past three days.” Dennis’s face fell, and he tilted his head back down, eyes locking in and beginning to count the speckles in the tile floor, until long, deft fingers met his chin and tilted his face back upward, forcing him back into the eye contact that would be his undoing. “Tell me where it hurts.”
