The tension in the room was thick like frozen blackstrap molasses and equally as smoky and bitter. A half-finished cigarette coiled cold blue smoke from its orange tip, searing the air with menthol and tobacco smoke. It was clutched between two long, slender fingers, and it burned to the speckled orange filter carelessly, forgotten completely by its lighter. Kind of a shame, Ray thought distantly.
“That’s a funny way of saying thank you,” he spat out instead.
Sand scowled, and his thumb flicked the filter, sending ash tumbling to the hostel floor; Ray felt his irritation flare. There was a fucking ashtray right next to Sand.
“That’s because it wasn’t a thank you, shithead. What do you think I am?”
“What do you think you are?”
