Summary
Sid was pretty sure that some wires had gotten crossed in his brain a long time ago, the ones that were meant to keep arousal on one path, and hockey on the other.
Maybe it was a function of having to have been at peak physical fitness for so much of his youth that had triggered it, or maybe, it was just how things were meant to be, but until that very first concussion, Sid had just associated days with the trainers or the physios with days where he got a new stick or a new mouthguard - his body just couldn’t determine how to deal with the excitement, and so it all went south.

"Was it better?" Shane asked. He was still refusing to look directly at Ilya, his gaze fixed on the pattern of the hotel duvet cover instead, his fingers tracing the seam of the pillowcase with repetitive strokes.
"It was good," Ilya said softly, his voice lacking the hesitation that had plagued his English years ago.
"But the reality was better," Ilya continued, his voice dropping to that low, rumbling register that always seemed to settle Shane’s nerves. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against Shane's temple, "because the reality? It led us here. To them."

Scott knew the boys’ moods well enough by now to know that giving them the chance to gravitate back towards each other would be counter-productive to everything that they wanted to achieve tonight - namely, getting their minds off things. If left to their own devices, Scott knew that Shane would get lost in Ilya’s present stormcloud, and Ilya, in turn, would try to stoically shoulder the burden for both of them until he collapsed. David passed Shane’s childhood bedroom on his way to bed and stopped. Shane was standing by the dresser, turning something over in his hands. The warm-up puck, David recognized instantly, the one Scott Hunter had given him all those years ago.
“A brave thing he did today,” David said lightly, testing to see what Shane would be comfortable engaging with him on.
Thankfully, Shane smiled. It was soft and distant, but it was there when he replied softly, “hope it’ll give others the chance to be brave too.”
David nodded once. Then, carefully, he added, “but they don’t have to be. No one has to do what Hunter did. Not if they don’t want to.”
