Summary
Two-bit was not meant to take care of people.
Sure, he was the second oldest in the gang, but Darry always took care of everyone. And sure, he had a kid sister, but his mom was always around to help.
It’s not that he didn’t care for his friends and family, he just wasn't really needed. He was the wisecracker of the group, the one who made people laugh and smile, the one who always had something to say.
But seeing the youngest of the gang get knocked to the ground and not get up sparked something inside of him.

Summary
After everything that happened in the book, life isnt giving Ponyboy a break; he starts to develop a lot of chronic issues. You get to see his life slowly deteriorate, and see the truth behind how a large majority of chronically ill people are treated. We start in the summer of 1966, with Pony working his library job and dealing with his pain getting more prominent everyday.

Suddenly, Pony was sick all over the bed, coughing and gagging as the contents of his stomach emptied. Though he didn’t understand how there was even anything left to be emptied, considering he’d hardly eaten today.
Once Pony finished, he sagged back against his brother, who held onto him tightly. “S-Soda. Soda, I don’t feel good.”
Soda kissed the top of his brother’s head. “I know, baby, I know. It’s gonna be–” He stopped short, only now getting a good look at the sick on Pony’s bed. It was unlike anything Soda had ever seen. It was dark brown, and it almost looked like…coffee grounds? Soda knew for certain this wasn’t normal. Something was very, terribly wrong with his brother.
Or:
Ponyboy is worried about a test on Friday and Darry promises to help his little brother study. But it turns out he's more worried than anyone knew, worried enough to make himself severely sick. Darry's out with his friends when he finds out Pony is in the hospital, instead of at home - where they were supposed to be studying together.
