Summary
The dead did not answer prayers.
Jayce had learned that lesson long before the gods had ever heard him.
Not once did Viktor, the mage, the scholar, the truest architect of the arcane that Jayce could comprehend, find a way to converse with him. Though, that would be difficult in his current state; ashes and dust,and a stray piece of cane that survived the explosion, buried six feet below Faerun’s grounds in a pauper’s grave.
He prayed.
And prayed.
And he prayed until his voice would fail him.
“I know not who listens,” He would mutter beneath coarse, baited breath, “I do not know whose domain I trespass. But if there remains any power, any power that values truth over pride…mercy over ambition….then hear me.”
His hazel eyes would look up to plead if he knew it would find him absolution, but he had come to find the action futile.
“I could not save him.”
A frequent admission.
“I cannot change that.”

Summary
The first time that Mel Medarda walked into Viktor’s lecture hall, the air rearranged itself around her the way that it does around cathedral windows when the sun finally hits the right angle.
He was, at his oldest, maybe twenty-one years old, all elbows and borrowed time, looking as though he was still growing into the length of his bones and the weight of his accent.
She watched him with eyes the color of peridots, something rich and lovely, befitting of a princess. Her gaze reminded him of the way that the princess in "Of Crowns and Cinders" watched the foreign court on her first night officially on council: curious, measuring, as if she were already deciding who she could trust.
The Zaunite assistant forgot the next three sentences of his lecture. The chalk snapped between his fingers.
She smiled in a way that was small, knowing, and inclined her head at the tiniest of fractions, as if saying: Now try to continue.

The peridots of her eyes followed the slow descent of snow as she nestled into his side, “Do you know what day it is?”
“A cold one,” Viktor replied without hesitation, “Post-solstice, inefficiently festive. I believe that it is a Monday.”
There was a mischievous smile curling at the edges of her lips already, “And?”
His gaze finally shifted from the window and moved towards her, brows knitting faintly, “Is this a test?”
“Perhaps,” She chirped, “Though, you are usually quite good at those. Maybe you are losing your edge.”
“I perform well with sufficient parameters.” He countered.
A quiet laugh left her lips as she reached for his other hand, threading their fingers together. Lately, his skin had been warm- warmer than she expected, especially in winter. When they had first met, his extremities were always frigid, though those sorts of things changed with enough care. Her heart beat contentedly at that, pleased by her success.
“Today is December twenty-ninth.”
“Yes,” he said, “I suppose that would be the number assigned to the date.”
“And,” Mel pressed, eyes playful and bright, “it is your birthday.”

Silco stopped laughing.
“Four months,” He took the remnants of the cigarette and pressed it into the skin of Viktor’s hand, “Four rules, and you think that you are the one holding the leash.” He was tasting the rules, trying to figure out if he liked the flavor, “You may be a little wolf, but you are a dog all the same.”
Viktor didn’t flinch when he smelled his own burning skin, nor did he pull away. His pen simply stilled against the page, his eyes flickering up towards the older man with a look that was sharp as broken glass.
“Let me tell you how this deal will actually work, little wolf.”
He stepped closer, forcing Viktor’s back against the edge of the desk. Silco’s hand settled at the base of Viktor’s throat, no pressure, just presence. A threat ready to be acted upon.
