    Summary

Something awful roils in Aranessa's stomach. That fracture opened up by the separation of Julien's hands from hers is widening, forming a yawning well of desperation, a frightening thing that digs its fingers into her and threatens to rip her apart. She bites her tongue until blood slips down her throat, trying to tame the monster, to call it to heel.

It does not work. Her lungs are not working either. No matter how many times she opens her mouth to say yes, Julien, you have my permission, the words simply refuse to come out.

"I would beg you to stay, Sir Davinos," she whispers. The tears surge up again, threatening to choke her words. She holds them back. "I do not wish to spend the night alone."

In another universe, Julien remains at the Palazzo, instead of going to the Tangled Sheet.

    Summary

Annabeth understood this the way she understood load-bearing walls and weight distribution. The enmity was structural. It held things up. You did not remove it without understanding what it was holding.

She was twelve years old, and she understood it perfectly, and she was certain she would never have cause to think about it differently.

    Then a boy arrived.

He was blonde and blue-eyed and looked like he had lost a fight with a lawnmower, and he was unconscious, and he smelled, unmistakably and impossibly, of the deep ocean.

Annabeth stood in the doorway of the infirmary and looked at him for a long moment. Something in her went very still in the way that things go still right before something large and irreversible happens — the held breath before the earthquake, the instant of silence before a wave breaks.

She did not name the feeling. She was twelve. She was the pride of her mother. She was going to be great.

    She turned and walked away.

It would not be the last time she would try.

No matter how hot the water, or how many layers of fire-warmed quilts she wraps herself in, or how many hot bricks they put in her bed, Aranessa cannot chase the chill away.

    Summary

(In which Aranessa still loves and has yet to forgive her estranged husband, Thjazi wants to leave something that will outlast him, and Julien has the familiar feeling of being in over his head.)

“You are not invited here,” he snarls out. “The lady will see you if she wishes.”

“Good boy,” Thjazi says approvingly, from the ground and on his back. The bastard. Julien’s knife presses down in immediate, wordless response and draws a streak of blood across the smug idiot's throat, but it does not sink all the way home. They both know it won’t. They’ve been here before. In that sense, though it aches ice cold for Julien to admit it even to himself, Thjazi has already won.

“Julien?” Her voice rings out, and the balcony is suddenly lit with a dozen or more lights, tiny floating things pulsing with the movement of life and moving ahead along the path of her intent. She doesn’t always notice when she does that, but fortunately they are not so bright as to wake the entire household. Aranessa emerges from her bedchamber in a nightgown, hair loose and steps out to the balcony. “What is-”
