Sometimes Erling asks himself when it was that he grew up—whether he ever did. Whether Jude is the same kid he knew back then, brimming with all of that same cheeky irreverence and stubborn bravado. His Jude. The Jude he knew. Or, at least, the first Jude he knew. The one he thinks he might have gotten to know before anyone else.
They were just kids, and they could go anywhere, and they could do anything. That’s what everyone told him, at least, and he knows Jude heard it too—hell, Jude heard it from him. Look at you. Seventeen. Look at you. I think you could win it all. I think you could do whatever the hell you wanted.
