Summary
After losing her job, discovering her ex-boyfriend and best friend's husband buried alive, and falling in debt to a cowboy hat wearing sex-trafficking drug kingpin, Maddy Perez has officially lost all confidence in herself, and given up on praying for a future in Southern California.
But, her prayers are answered when the crime lord she is indebted to is murdered in a strip club shootout. For the first time in months, Maddy realizes she might have a future after all.
History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes.
And Maddy can't figure out how the quiet and mysterious Bishop fits into hers. He seems to be everywhere, and nowhere all at once, always appearing when she least expects it and somehow always when she needs him. Now that Pandora’s box has been opened, she can’t help but wonder more about William. Not William the Bloody, as she’s well-acquainted with him, but William the man. It’s possible he was as bad as Spike claims, but she doubts that. His mother, whoever she was, sounded like she loved him. A lot.

It’s wrong, she knows, to take such pleasure in it. To use him the way she does. For her, this is just so she can feel alive. Feel real. It’s the closest she can get to what it felt like, when she was in Heaven. To him, it means something more. Whatever he feels for her, it’s not love, but it’s something and it’s real to him. She can never give him exactly what it is she wants yet she keeps him near her by offering him this.
It’s all she can give.
