    Second, build the cage. Offer comfort. Offer warmth. Offer your hand not as a trap, but as something to be trusted. Let the bird step into the cage willingly.

    Third, be patient. Let it grow tired. Feed it when it forgets to eat. Whisper to it until your voice becomes the only thing it recognizes. Most importantly, do NOT open the cage. Just leave the door slightly ajar and tell it there is nothing outside worth flying to.

    And if one day it sings only for you, then you’ve done it.
