Nat has given up any hope of a future for herself, accepting a life doomed to drinking and anger like her father, but Lottie has other plans when hearing Coach Martinez threaten to kick Nat off the team if she doesn’t get her grades up. Lottie forces herself in the role of Nat’s tutor given that Nat helps keep guys away from her at parties while also keeping her sexuality secret from her family, all whilst juggling her own family problems.

She sees Nat in her peripheral vision, floating in the pool beside her, her face normally covered with hair floating out around her head, eyes normally clouded with eyeliner that she hasn’t bothered to put on for her audience of Lottie and Lottie alone. She smiles at Lottie, the way she does when they’re alone, the way that Lottie loves, but would never point out for fear that Nat’ll stop doing it if she does. That look in her eyes, in the curve of her lips, the tenderness, the raw affection.
“Whatever you want, Lot. I’ll be there.”
.lottie's parents skip her high school graduation. her and nat go on a road trip to get away from it. seven days of just nat, lottie, and the road. they come back from the road trip, but their emotional journey has only just begun.
