Summary
Let’s be clear: Todd loved (and loves) spending time with Neil, no matter what they’re doing or where they are. But it was going to be embarrassing. He was going to make a fool out of himself, embarrass himself in front of everyone, make Neil ashamed to be his friend and positive he never wanted to see him again.
But let’s take a step back, let’s add some context to Todd’s panic: they were going ice skating together.
or, everyone suspiciously bail out on Todd and Neil last minute, so they have to go ice skating on their own, and a fall is bound to happen.

Neil knew, better than anyone, that Todd Anderson was special. Ethereal, even. He was warm and earnest and gentle in a school that, most days, was more excrement than excellent.
It should have come as no surprise when someone else seemed to come to that same realisation.
It was fine. Todd deserved the recognition. Neil wasn’t jealous.
