Summary
Carla replayed it in her mind over and over— the cold look on Lisa’s face as she’d told Carla to go, the blame she had spat in Carla’s face. It was impossible to reconcile this with her love, her life, the Lisa who had held her hand all those months ago and told her she was never going anywhere.

Summary
“Doesn’t your husband do most of the work?” Carla asks, eyes widening as soon as she realises what she’s said. She scrambles immediately. “Sorry. I meant… Well. Not that women can’t— Oh god. I’m making it worse, aren’t I?”
“Carla, it’s fine… But there’s no husband. The farm’s mine. I do have a couple of staff who help me out though.”
“Wow… Must be hard work,” Carla says, blowing out a breath.
“Why? ‘Cause I’m a woman?”
