Summary
It happens in an instant.
Over Ilya’s shoulder, Shane sees the doctor and Wiebe give each other a look, and in a sudden bout of impatient anxiety, Shane ends up saying the words that come to ruin everything.
“Don’t touch me.”
The effect is instantaneous. Ilya’s hands fly to his sides, and Shane gets a front row seat as Ilya’s heart breaks before his very eyes. Eyes dimming and lips trembling in slow, painful technicolor.
It causes Shane’s heart to break, too, and he vows, immediately, never to see such a look cross his husband’s face again.

Summary

So when Shane tries to push him away after a crushing loss, it leads to a tense argument. But ten years of rivalry are no match for Shane’s tears; the second he starts to cry, Ilya folds like a house of cards.
Or: Shane tries to starve himself as punishment for losing, Ilya tries to feed him, and it turns into a very soft night of pampering because Ilya is legally incapable of staying angry at a crying Shane.

He remembers showing up to L.A. without notice, all sweaty from the Harvard sweater plastered to his skin because he took the goddamn redeye and didn’t pack a thing, knocking until the lazy fuck got up and stood in front of him with bleary eyes, ready to yell, and instead got washed over by visible confusion and just untethered happiness. The way he shoved forty-something pages into his hands and Ben didn’t need an explanation. He just stepped aside to let Matt in and quipped, “I’ll start a pot. Cigarettes are on the counter.”
And that was the beauty of working with Ben. He just fucking got it. He understood what Matt was offering without ever really needing to explain anything. It’s always been like that. Innate. Not something that grew over a decade of friendship but something that was placed within them by the goddamn universe or something.

Buck snaps. He pushes off the couch and crowds into Eddie’s space.
“Is this what you wanted?” He spits, pushing hard enough against Eddie’s chest that he takes a step backwards. “Hmm? You want me to lose it on you?”
Or, Eddie cannot handle Buck pretending to be fine about his move to Texas. He, in fact, refuses to let him.
