“Can I ask you a question?” he said.
Briar spared him a glance over her shoulder before focusing on filling the vase, twisting the handle so a steady stream of water sputtered out. “Yes. Can’t guarantee I’ll answer.”
He gave an amused huff. “Why did you want to work here?”
She shut the water off, turning to face him. She couldn’t help but feel frustrated. It was as if everyone needed her to justify why she chose this job when her answer was always the same. She tilted her head to the side, observing the man before her for a moment and then countering his question with, “Why did you want to be an assistant here?”
He looked like he wanted to toss the question aside and continue pressing her for an answer, but then he seemed to hesitate before his demeanor softened just the slightest. “I’ve always loved magic,” he admitted with a shrug. “The more power you have as a mage, the more access you have to everything related to magic.”
Briar, satisfied with his answer, headed back to the work table to replace some of the flowers broken in the fall with fresh ones. “I’ve always loved plants. If I can live comfortably and spend my life taking care of the things I love, why wouldn’t I strive for that?”
