Holding Mary in my arms, looking down at her, she was so fragile and – ’ Suddenly, Tom took off his spectacles and wiped his hand furiously across his eyes. ‘Forgive me.’ More quietly, he repeated in an altered tone. ‘Forgive me, please.’
There had been times in the past two months when Tom’s inexplicable disappearance had disappointed her. But her heart ached for him now, for all he had said and what he had not, the suffering which was so palpable and the diffidence which had been so grotesquely exploited.

Mary looked out across the garden again. Tomorrow, she would catch the bus to her faculty building, not a packed commuter train with a two hour journey ahead of her, instead from a home where she had been told she was most welcome.
For the first time since her father's death, she allowed herself to imagine the future without a sense of dread attached to it. London suddenly didn't seem frightening at all.
It felt, quietly and unexpectedly, like her real life was about to begin.

Mary Bennet spent years loving Tom Hayward quietly. Quietly enough that nobody noticed. Not Tom, who only ever saw his best friend's younger sister. Not Jane, who never realised how carefully Mary stayed out of the way.
University changed everything. By the time Mary returned, she learnt how to take up space; she became someone she finally recognised in the mirror.
Then she moved into the spare room of Tom’s flat.
Tom can't understand why the friend he remembers so fondly now keeps him carefully at arm's length. Mary can't understand why the boy from her past suddenly seems determined to learn every version of who she's become.

When embarking on their anonymous email experiment, The Rules that TinternAbbeys and MrsMacaulayKnowsAll had set up were very clear:
1. No personally identifying information of any kind
2. No looking the other person up at all
3. No texts/calls/meeting in person
4. These messages are a way to reclaim a dying form of communication, so at least try to keep to some level of etiquette - it’s the correspondence that’s the point!Rule number four is easy to follow. The other three, less so…especially when Tom Hayward and Mary Bennet meet for what they think is the very first time.
