‘Thomas, we're taking a break,’ Kocoum warned him urgently.
But Thomas paid him no heed and shot the next arrow. Just missed again.
When he felt the weight of Kocoum's hand on his shoulder again, he wheeled round angrily.‘I can do this, Kocoum,’ he snapped at his companion. ‘I have to.’
Kocoum stood an arm's length away from him and looked at him with a blank expression. The stern expression on his face had disappeared.
‘Why?’
It was just one word, but what lay behind it upset Thomas. He gestured wildly at the rotten tree with the bow in his left hand.
‘A man isn't a man if he can't shoot,’ he declared, feeling his heart hammering in his chest.
Ratcliffe's words and those of the other men on the ship's crew echoed in his ears, although they were long gone.
You are unfit to be a sailor. And you are a very bad soldier. Don't disappoint me again.
And now Kocoum had also realised that Thomas was good for nothing.

Summary
