Summary
Before Eddie can even figure out the words to ask, Buck speaks again, always somehow managing to read his mind. “I know you want to ask about it,” he says while picking at the skin around his nails. “You—you wanna know what happened, that’s fair, but…” he sighs. “Not yet. Please.”
Eddie nods, releasing a low, “Of course.” He straightens up in his seat to check the time on the radio. “We have eight hours and forty-seven minutes anyway.”
Buck lets out a small huff of breath at that, but he doesn’t speak again. He turns back to the window. A new soft song plays through the speakers. Eddie wants to turn it off, but he leaves it on. He grips the wheel tighter.

Summary
“You don’t want to be my girlfriend.”
“I already said that.”
“But you want to be my—my something else?”
Eddie’s breath catches. Her eyes fly open, stinging and damp.
She doesn’t answer. Her throat constricts, trapping breath inside, trapping a response inside. Silently, she prays to a god she’s not sure she believes in that the floor will open up and swallow her whole. She can’t hear him say what she thinks he’s about to say; she can’t hear it, not even once. She can’t come back from that. She just—she can’t.
Buck pushes on, hesitant. “...My boyfriend?”
OR
Eddie doesn’t know how to be the man his heart yearns to be. Buck waits for him to learn.

Summary
“It was almost you,” He finds himself saying, eyes still closed, mind caught on a frozen image. A still frame of Eddie’s eyes on him, a line of blood running between his eyes.
He hears Eddie’s surprised inhale and turns his head lazily, blinking at him. Watching the weight of the words sink into him.
Eddie frowns, shuffling to turn towards him fully. “What?”
The corners of Buck’s mouth rise, wry and bittersweet and trembling. “You were standing next to him,” he offers, voice cracking. “It was almost you.” He pauses, turns his gaze back to the ceiling and exhales slowly. “Again.”
Eddie goes still, body tensed and frozen, and Buck closes his eyes again.

Summary
“You know, I didn’t have you go back to the hospital ‘cause I figured the whole being-stuck-in-a-room-with-a-scalpel-wielding-robot thing was still a little fresh, but now I see that would’ve been better than having to watch—”
“It’s fine.”
Eddie huffs and slides Buck’s pants past his feet. His belt clanks against the floor.
“It’s not fine, Buck.”
or, Buck needs a moment after the subway rescue. Eddie gives it to him.
