    Summary

Bucky flees into the arms of the army to make something out of his life. Gale joins it to prove to the world that he can succeed regardless of his sub-gender. They meet. Bucky baptizes him Buck. Things become more complicated from then on.

An A/B/O retelling of Masters of the Air.

    Extract:
There is a strength in John Egan, in the way he holds himself, in the shine of his eyes, powerful. Gale longs to emulate it, because he too wants to be easy-going, easily-loved, wants to show up and be friends with complete strangers.

Bucky says 'trust me' and Gale does. Unconditionally.

There is a steadiness in Gale Cleven which Bucky longs to emulate, the way with which he stands by his principles so faithfully, the way he commands respect because he is one of the best, because he is smart and secure, unshakable. Bucky wants to lean against him, wants to be held up by that steadiness, wants it to shield him from his own tenderness.

Buck says 'follow me' and John does. Unwaveringly.

    Summary

He takes the final step, lifts the lantern to flood the empty station with light, and sees a man laying on his stable floor.
He’s brunette, sweating, breathing unsteadily. There’s blood wiped messily on his forehead, down his neck. Half laying, half sitting up against the stack of haybales Buck keeps at the bottom of this station, he’s got one bloody hand pressed to his right thigh, which is caked with crimson. His other hand rests wearily on the Colt that’s tucked into the waistband of his pants.
Gale’s heart jumps, he wishes suddenly that he really did have a rifle, but when the man sees that Buck’s unarmed he raises the hand slowly, in a shaky surrender.
    -
“You got a name?” Buck asks, in an attempt to distract.
The stranger swallows and takes a deep breath. “Bucky.”
Buck almost pauses in his work. He scoffs and shakes his head. “I’ll be damned.”
    “Why’s that?”
    “People call me Buck.”
Bucky huffs out a pained laugh, which quickly devolves into a groan. When he’s finished, he says, “Goddamn fate.”

    -

The one where stablehand Gale finds outlaw John “Bucky” Egan bleeding out in his stables.

(The sequel, seven miles out of freedom town, has been posted.)

    Summary

“You’re a good story teller, you know.”

Buck can feel the heat of a blush burning against his skin. He shrugs, shoulders brushing his ears. Their bodies bracketed the center of the bed in an identical curvature, breaths perfectly out of sync. Buck inhaling John’s exhale, sighs out oxygen for him.

“So’d those kids invite you back for the next game?”

Buck smiles, and wonders again at the steadfast belief John held that Buck was just as likable and good as himself. “Nah.”

“I would have.” John says softly, “I’d teach you how to catch that baseball Buck.”
