Oh, he’d definitely done it now, was all Leon could think as gravel flew from under The Baron’s hooves, hands tight on the reins as they flew through the woods, far off the trail most folks took. His ears still rung from the gunshots, gunpowder sticking to his sweaty palms from the violent aftermath. He looked to the sky, a silent prayer to whoever was listening that maybe, just maybe, Deadeye wouldn’t kill him before the rangers did.
Leon was no stranger to violence, such was life as an outlaw, or hell, such was life in Louisiana. You grow used to the bloodshed, the fear the law will catch up to you. You learn to sleep light, be quick on your feet and even quicker to the draw. What you don’t get used to is the sound of blood pounding in your ears, that feeling in your chest that every breath you take may be your last. No matter how many times it happens you never ever get used to it.
