Still, she could not do the assigned coursework because it was locked away in her cupboard. She was confined to the miserable, humid, stuffy attic of her aunt and uncle's home. Oh, and she also happened to be a witch. A fifteen-year-old witch at that.

Something snaps her out of her thoughts. At first she isn’t sure what it is. Her brow furrows, and she takes a second look. There, walking down the pathway. She can’t see their face, only their back but Vera knows that walk. She would know that purposeful, confident stride anywhere. It’s toned down, a muted expression of what it could be and still Vera is undeniably reminded of her former boss and current wanted fugitive Joan Ferguson.
Grace makes a noise in her sleep and Vera’s attention is pulled toward her baby. Only a second. When she looks back up, all's right with the world and the sun is shining. No sign of any hooded stranger.
Vera shakes it off. Puts it down to her exhausted mind playing tricks on her. Joan Ferguson is dead. Will had shown them her body.
She’s dead and the game they’d played between them for so long finally rests alongside her.
