    Summary

Lady Danbury sets her tea cup in its saucer on the table and fixes Penelope with her intense gaze.

    "I'd like to sponsor you."

Penelope chokes on her next swig of tea so badly that Lady Danbury rises, moving next to her and patting her back until her hacking abates. Penelope takes in a few steadying breaths, willing air into her lungs. She is sure she misheard, that the shock of her choking has altered her memory. "Pardon, my lady? You wish to…?"

    "Sponsor you. For the season."

After Archibald Featherington loses the family fortune when Penelope is thirteen, the family is forced to adapt to life as members of the lower class. By nineteen, Penelope has become Madame Delacroix's apprentice, and her fine skills with a needle catch the eye of Lady Agatha Danbury. Debuting in society thrills and terrifies her in equal measure, as she knows nothing of how a proper lady should behave, but she wants nothing more than to escape from her cruel, embittered mother—and she is perfectly content to settle for a straightforward, comfortable marriage in order to do so.

    Summary

“The columnist who writes the Love and Sex column has had a medical emergency,” Penelope explains as she takes a fortifying sip of wine. “They want me to take over writing the column for her for an indefinite amount of time while she recovers.”
Francesca gives Penelope an appraising look. “You’re nervous about this? Why?”
“I suppose it’s two things,” Penelope says, looking into the middle distance between her friends. “First, it’s a lot of work.”
“You’ve never been afraid of hard work, Pen,” Eloise offers.
“Thank you, but second, and probably more importantly, I don’t think I have the requisite experience to do it well.”
“Why? You’re a great writer,” Colin says from the corner where he’s been uncharacteristically quiet all night.
Penelope feels herself flame red. “It’s not my writing that’s the issue.”
    --
Or Penelope is given a work assignment to author a popular Sex Advice column but doesn’t feel she has had enough “experience” to do it well. Colin offers to “help.”
