Summary
Tom hated Mitchell since their first meeting as plebes in the Naval Academy, when despite Tom being three years older, he and Mitchell ended up starting the same year, because they didn't even allow male Omegas in before 1979.
Tom hated Mitchell because he was a short cocksure male Alpha, so it didn't matter that he was the son of the Beta traitor.
There were only six Alphas in their year, so pretty much nobody dared to question Mitchell place in Annapolis.
Tom was a male Omega, so it didn't matter that his father was a respected Navy Admiral Alpha.
Everyone was still questioning even allowing male Omegas in Annapolis, so it really didn't matter how perfect Tom was and how good his every score or grade was.
He was an Omega first, and why was he even there, instead of looking for some Alpha or Beta to marry and knock him up, like good Omega should?
So yeah, Tom hated Mitchell for almost all four years of their time together in Annapolis, so much that he seriously considered going to the Marine Corps just so he would never have to deal with him again!
Then Mitchell ended up killing Professor Hereward to save Tom's life, and Tom ended up going in stress induced heat.

Summary
AU where fem!Maverick and Goose never were iconic Pilot and RIO duo. They didn't even meet until they had one night stand in 1988 in Las Vegas. (That resulted in an accidental pregnancy.)
AKA. AU where Maverick was born a girl, and United States Air Force Academy (first) sexual assault scandal happened in 1978. So when Petra Mitchell applied to the Air Force Academy beside USNA just to be safe, they were so low on quality female candidates that they were actually willing to overlook her father's reputation. Since USNA wasn't, Petra Mitchell joined the Air Force. She even ended up being the second ever female WIC instructor in Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
Nick "Goose" Bradshaw left the Navy after he had to stop flying when in 1986 he ended up with a permanent limp. His Pilot, Cougar suffered a severe panic attack unable to safely land, and crashed their F-14. He started working as a photographer. When his wife Carole died from cancer less than two years later, he moved to live with his parents in Las Vegas, to have them help him with Bradley more.
AKA. fem!Maverick, Goose and Baby Goose speed run becoming a "normal" nuclear family.

Summary
Alphas rarely accept children that aren't their own, especially when the children in question aren't their omegas'. There were even cases of alphas throwing such kids out of the home, the omega powerless to act. So when Bradley comes to live with them, Mav expects Ice to act like...well, an Alpha.
But the Iceman never was a typical alpha.
