It’s not a question. Both Feng Xin and Mu Qing have tried to convince him to join them in heaven but he won’t. Shi Qingxuan knows they have little chance of convincing him to eschew solitude, Xie Lian’s mind is not easily changed once he’s decided.
“I need to be here when he comes back,” Xie Lian says, dropping the cherry back into the basket. He seems to have lost whatever appetite he had a moment ago. “I want him to know that I waited.”

Hua Cheng raised his brows. The bottle? Sure enough, when he followed the red string back outside, it led him right back to the pile of scraps, disappearing into the narrow neck of the bottle, which was lying abandoned on the grass.
He carefully picked it up and peered inside. There at the bottom was Xie Lian, looking up at him with a mix of resignation and embarrassment on his face.
And oh, what a small face. Hua Cheng shook himself. This wasn’t the time to get distracted by how cute his tiny gege was.
“I found you,” he said softly, curling both hands protectively around the bottle.

Xie Lian gets a glimpse of its eye: a hot coal set deep into unearthly, marble-like skin, onyx pupil blown so wide with bloodlust it threatens to swallow the red iris entirely. A mouth full of entirely too many teeth, extended incisors bared like daggers. Rust smeared down the pale line of its throat.
A vampire. A feral vampire.
Looking at him like a feast set out before a starving man.
While wandering the mortal realm, Xie Lian stumbles upon a hungry vampire who, curiously, seems reluctant to drink from him.
