The tortoiseshell kitten was small enough to fit in the palm of Simon’s hand, which was saying something—he didn’t exactly have delicate fingers. It sat hunched on the cracked pavement, fur patchy with dirt, one ear notched from some past scrape. It blinked up at him with round, amber eyes, and let out a sound so pitiful it might as well have been a knife to the ribs.
Simon crouched, balancing his grocery bags against his thigh. "You’re not supposed to be here," he muttered, glancing around the alley like the cat’s owner might materialize. No such luck. Just damp brick walls and the distant hum of city traffic. The kitten mewed again, pressing its forehead against his boot.

Something was wrong.
The rest of the team felt it in pieces—Price mentioned once that Soap had been quieter after Chicago. Gaz thought Tav had been sleeping less. Laswell noted his reports had become shorter.
But Ghost sees the whole picture. Soap is still smiling. Still cracking jokes. Still volunteering for the worst assignments. Still the first man through a door. Still the one who stays up with Gaz after a rough mission. Still the one who brings Price coffee before briefings. Still the one who patches everyone up, talks everyone down, keeps morale high.
Soap takes care of everyone… everyone except himself.

Okay, so after posting the initial 800 word ficlet, I started working on getting this much longer piece formatted. As of right now, it’s stand alone, but I’ve got so much rolling in my head with this AU that there very possibly might be more… would y’all be interested in that?

Summary
Recently creatureXIII posted a commission over on the Bluesky they’d done for tngnts and it altered my brain chemistry. Like, created a whole damn Mafia AU that I had to get out. So much so that I put together not just this one lil ficlet, but another 7k+ fic that is open-ended and will likely turn into more with proper editing. So, I suppose, enjoy the teaser for the Ghoap Mafia AU that has landed in my brain.

Summary
John “Soap” MacTavish is frozen under the weight of a singular glowing golden eye. Its vertical pupil dilates and contracts and Soap swears he can feel the physical weight of a touch skimming over his body as it trails up and down him, assessing. The touch feels as if a singular sharp claw is being dragged over his skin, holding him in place with the silent threat of evisceration should he so much as breathe.
So he doesn’t breathe, he doesn’t move, he can’t even bring himself to look away from that eye as he’s studied; as his fate is decided by the sleek, inky black creature standing just a few feet in front of him.
Soap’s skin feels as if it’s burning under the weight of that stare, but he’s finally able to take a breath in. He lets it out through his nose slowly, quietly, and is careful not to move as he tries to convince his body he isn’t in danger.
But he isn’t convinced. . . isn’t even close, and as he’s able to finally tear his gaze away from the one eye that he can see, he becomes almost sure that he is in danger.
