He didn't know how to say it to her sparkling eyes and wide smile, but he really hadn't cared much about his birthday since elementary school. His father's enthusiasm had started losing its charm by then, and Ichigo was content to let him point that energy towards his sisters, anyway.
“If you say so.” He grinned and reached out to gently cup her cheek with his hand. “I don't really have anything in mind, though. How do people usually celebrate their birthdays?”
“Don't worry, I’ll take care of it.” Orihime giggled. “I’ve got something amazing in mind. I’m sure you'll love it!”
Ichigo could practically see the gears moving in her brain, though he could never predict the outcome of all that thinking. If it made her happy, he probably didn't have to think too hard about it.
In hindsight, he really should have asked more questions.

Taking place right after Kurosaki Ichigo returns to the World of the Living with the body of fellow Substitute Shinigami, Ginjō Kūgo. Things are peaceful as Ichigo and friends finish high school and embark into early adulthood. However, things will not remain as such. Things have begun to move in the dark. People have been going missing, and bodies are found. At least parts of them... Ichigo studied the beautiful noble face of the man flickering before him, copying every part of him to memory. His high imperial cheekbones and steely eyes. The chin-length black hair fluttering loosely about his face. He often lamented the loss of Byakuya’s longer silken tresses after the Winter War but he also adored the shorter ones and the way they slipped through his fingers. Could he give up everything in order to see to it that the future was changed? Would he, in a new timeline, still meet his mate and fall in love with him? Would it matter so long as his mate lived to see another day? A burning fire lights up in his chest as he turns away from the image of the raven-haired Shinigami Captain to look upon the Soul King.
