Summary
Dragons have been silent for more than half a century. All that remains are their skulls lined in the throne room of the Red Keep, a morbid reminder of greatness.
The Targaryen influence across the Seven Kingdoms has been slowly diminishing, for a man without a dragon is just another man. The Realm yearns for stability, but what stability is there to be had when the ruling dynasty drowns in blood ever so often?
The royal family heads for a tourney in Ashford in a bid to bolster their image. Against better judgment, Maekar, Prince of Summerhall, takes his three unruly sons with him.
On the way to Ashford, Prince Daeron Targaryen dreams of an onyx and ivory cyvasse board drowned in blood, the game's mismatched pieces covered in black ash, and a great shadow towering above. It is a warning of what is about to come.
There is a game to be played, a game that begins the moment Aerion Targaryen breaks a puppeteer’s finger in a fit of rage and gets punched in the face by a nameless hedge knight.
Play the game right, and the dragons might sing again.

Summary
Derek first sees him from across the quad four days into fall semester. He’s sitting on one of the long benches, a marker pen in his mouth, grinning at something the kid lounging on the bench beside him is saying. When he laughs properly he pulls the pen out and throws his head back, his neck a long, lean line Derek is entranced by. He flicks the page in his book and highlights something, tossing the cap up in the air and catching it with his teeth.
