Maki wasn’t sure where she stood in the world—and it was unnerving.
Shuichi wanted her to stop killing, but there was no way she could escape the grasps that she had been tangled in. Maki was knotted in and there was no easy way to undo the ties. It was like when a necklace chain got tangled, how her husband would carefully lay it out on the counter and use pins to separate the intricate knots. Some had to be released before Shuichi could work his way to the center. If he skipped ahead it would only become more irredeemably tangled. The smaller knots were what she had to protect: the orphanage, her friends, her husbands. Only after those could be smoothed out would it be suitable to reach the core.

Kaito snorts, and Shuichi suppresses a smile, shaking his head. Maki snarks, but she remains lying down with her face tilted towards the sky, eyes flickering occasionally in Kaito’s direction, as though waiting for him to say something.
He does, after a moment, rolling one shoulder. “Y’know… they don’t actually look the same as they do every night. I don’t recognise any’a these guys.” He points up to the sky. “That star there’s as bright as Polaris, but it’s not in the right spot. And none of the constellations are the ones I remember from back home, or even in the Southern Hemisphere.” His brow knits, and Shuichi watches his lips press into a thin line. “Kinda makes you wonder… where the hell are we? How can we still be on earth?”
Contemplating Kaito’s words, Shuichi rolls back onto his back and looks at the stars too.
