Summary
Rushu sucks her teeth and sets up their brazier, then takes a prim seat on the edge of a bench, sweeping her thick silken layers about her legs to keep away the cold. "Already considering the Heavenless Lord your husband, then?"
Lu Zhi takes his place. The garden is frozen and still as his own heart, the only life in it the flame flickering beneath the kettle stand, Rushu's stiff motions as she washes out the pale porcelain kettle, the somnolent sweep of a dragonfish's tail as it rises and falls beneath the water's surface.
And, of course, the guard on duty across the pond, watching.
