Summary
Sonic the hedgehog had been living a double life. By day he was the friendly owner and proprietor of The Trade Winds Tavern. By night, he became the hooded vigilante known as Swift Justice, rebelling against the tyrannous Robotnik Empire which sought only to turn the lush tropical region he and so many others called home, into a mechanized wasteland of metal and smog. When his double life finally catches up to him he is faced with a decision; endanger the lives of those he cares about most or set out on a treacherous journey that would change his life forever.
The most tragic thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies; it comes from those you trust the most.

Rouge's lips pursed as she looked away, looking awfully guilty all of a sudden.
He narrowed his eyes in suspicion, "What?"
Rouge stretched her arms out on the table, tapping her fingers awkwardly, "Well... I don't think he's the silent type if I'm being honest."
"You got me a talkative bodyguard? Are you serious?"

Summary
Shadow staggered to his feet; Sonic caught him at the shoulder before he fell over. “Hey,” Sonic murmured, “I meant it, you know. About being your friend.”
“I meant it too. You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
A different message than just a straight no, Shadow realized too late. He observed the sharp perk of Sonic’s ears while the grip that shifted to his bicep gave a squeeze. “Tell me. Tell me what I’m not getting.” A cough had Sonic wipe his mouth with the back of his glove. “I want to learn what it takes to be your friend.”

It started with the chao. Then, strange energy signatures. It was easy work; the everyday run-of-the-mill adventure leading him to an island called the Verdant Maw. Sonic’s friends would make space for him, always- but when he isn’t around, they’re still living their lives without him. He’s starting to feel the impact.
At least he can count on Shadow to stay the same.
The pair of hedgehogs work together to solve a new threat, learn just how far family extended beyond the ARK, and ask what it means to be a friend.

Summary
After Sonic's friends head out on their own solo-journeys and Dr. Eggman decides to retire, Sonic struggles to find a new purpose in his life during these times of peace and loneliness. Desperate for distractions, he starts seeking out thrill and getting into one mess after another until he eventually ends up back on Starfall Islands while stalking a shady group of "treasure hunters". Due to a series of unforseen events, the whole group gets involved in a major explosion, with Sonic becoming it's sole survivor.
The hero once again has to deal with being injected with Dark Gaia - while the last time it happened, the evil energy was unable to breach his mental defenses - but a fragile state of mind and years worth of unresolved issues which have all built up ever since then make this an entirely different case.
The weight of the past will eventually catch up even to the fastest thing alive.
