"You're one to talk," Phoenix says, feeling a little hysterical. What is happening right now. What is actually happening. What. "You've done nothing but talk crap this whole time I've known you. You're such a pain in the fucking ass. Do you get off to it or something?" Mentally, she immediately screams, Why did you say that!!!
Edgeworth's eyes go wider, and then, lightning-strike fast, she reaches up and yanks Phoenix's tie so that their faces are very close; she says, dangerously low, "No more than you, I'm sure."
And then she kisses her.
Two rivals have an unexpected late-night meeting. It goes how you expect.

"I was thinking about you, you know," Phoenix says easily.
Another pause, and she worries briefly that Edgeworth's going to hang up on her again. Instead, she does the worse, more exciting thing: "Were you now?"
"Yeah." She leans back in her office chair, holds the phone closer to her mouth. It feels more private this way, like a secret the two of them share — that is, technically, what it is, but this makes it feel more intentional. Like they're on even grounds, when it comes to their seasick wanting. "I had a really good time."
What's a little phone sex between rivals? Alternatively, no one could ever accuse Phoenix of knowing what's best for her.

Summary
"Are you sure," Phoenix says, trying very hard to keep her voice level, "that we don't have a conflict of interest?"
Edgeworth seems literally incapable of tearing her eyes away from her lips. "Of course not."
She reaches out and touches her hand, just lightly, and Edgeworth drops the briefcase. It lands on the carpeted floor with a muffled thud. "So none of this is bothering you?"
"No," Edgeworth insists, very faint. The responsible part of her is clawing at the walls and pounding her desk and shouting, Hold it! Hold it! The rest of Phoenix mentally shoots back, Oh, shut up, and then she breaches the space between them and kisses Miles Edgeworth for the second time.
Phoenix really wants this whole rivals with benefits thing to be casual. Unfortunately, she and Miles Edgeworth have never, not even one single time, been casual about each other.
