*******************************

“Yes, boss.”

“You’re dismissed, Akutagawa and Chuuya.”

“Yes, boss.”

Chuuya and Akutagawa stepped out of the boss’s spacious office. Falling into step beside each other, they made their way down the hallway, small talk flowing easily between them as they discussed missions and exchanged the latest rumors. Chuuya draped an arm around Akutagawa’s shoulders, somehow managing to stay steady despite their height differences.

“Hello, Akutagawa-senpai! Chuuya-San.”

Higuchi bowed to the two, holding the position for a couple seconds before straightening and offering them an easy smile. The two nodded once in acknowledgment. Tachihara was in the room behind her, putting away papers into files and putting away files into shelves. The three of them entered the room, Higuchi stepping forward to assist Tachihara as Chuuya let go of Akutagawa and picked up a fallen paper.

“Looks like boss has you working overtime, Tachi.”

Tachihara jumped slightly hearing the voice of his superior. Turning around, he bowed to the two newcomers, imitating higuchi as he kept himself there for a couple seconds before straightening.

“Sorry, I didn’t notice you two.”

He said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked back at the files. Then Chuuya’s earlier comment registered, and he responded casually.

“Oh, yeah. I lost to her,” he admitted, gesturing toward Higuchi.

She answered with a smug grin, earning a brief scowl from him before he turned back to the pair.

“During training. Hirotsu-san said my punishment was cleaning the office files. Boss happened to be standing beside him and agreed.”

As if on cue, Hirotsu stepped into the room, his sharp gaze sweeping across the desks. When seeing Chuuya and Akutagawa, he gave them a nod of acknowledgment before looking back at his subordinates.

“Higuchi. Tachihara. Nothing in this room has changed since I checked twenty minutes ago.” You have training with Gin and Kajii soon, hurry it up.”

Chuuya chuckled, Akutagawa coughing quietly as Chuuya suddenly turned to Higuchi.

“Didn’t Tachihara say he lost to you? Why are you here then?”

Hirotsu spoke for her, clearing his throat as he turned to Chuuya.

“She insisted on celebrating her victory rather immaturely. Therefore, she now shares his punishment.”

Chuuya chuckled, turning back toward Tachihara — only to find the space where he had been standing completely empty. He glanced around, his eyes eventually landing on Hirotsu.

“Say, where is Tachihara?”

Hirotsu looked around as well, his usual calm expression finally cracking into confusion.

“I swear if that boy slipped out while we were talking. I’ll knock some sense into that head of his.”

Suddenly, Akutagawa tapped Chuuya’s shoulder.

“Chuuya-San…Higuchi just…disappeared…?”

Chuuya looked at the space Higuchi stood to find it empty as well. He then turned back toward Hirotsu — only to find the older man had vanished too.

“Akutagawa.”

“Yes, Chuuya-san?”

“Did everyone just abandon us?”

Before Akutagawa could answer, Chuuya’s vision went completely black.

For one disorienting moment, he felt weightless, as though he were drifting through an endless void.

Then —

He hit concrete.

Groaning, Chuuya pushed himself upright, rubbing the back of his head where a dull ache had already begun to settle.

As his vision cleared, he found his missing coworkers scattered throughout the room, each wearing the same confused expression as they took in their surroundings. Upon noticing him, they all called out his name at once, fear evident in every voice. Beside him, a dazed Akutagawa appeared. Over the next few moments, Kajii, Gin, Q, Kouyou, and finally Mori materialized one after another.

Everyone wore the same bewildered expression.

Yet the moment Mori appeared, confusion gave way to instinct.

Every executive and subordinate alike dropped to one knee, showing the respect expected of them to their boss.

“Does anyone know where we are?”

The executives stood up and kept their heads down, answering his question with different terms of denial. After a minute, the rest of the PM members stood up, mimicking the executives and keeping their gazes fixed on the floor.

“Hello?”

All members of the Mafia turned towards the direction of the sound, which was behind them. There, they saw a young boy with blonde hair, a white shirt and blue overalls, some old sandals and a straw hat behind his back. The boy lit up when they turned, flashing an enthusiastic smile.

“Mister Fancy Hat!”

Chuuya smiled before he could stop himself, momentarily forgetting the presence of the other PM members as he made his way towards the boy.

“Hey, kid.”

He came up beside the boy and ruffled his hair, the younger one looking up at him in admiration and wonder.

A little distance ahead, a throat cleared. Kouyou looked at Chuuya with a small smile, clearly waiting for his explanation. Chuuya jumped a bit, remembering that his co-workers were all here and watching him. A flush crept up his neck, but he managed to keep a straight face.

“Uh- This is Kenji. He’s in the ADA.”

The black lizard members — Hirotsu being the lone exception — stiffened at the mention of their enemy. They straightened simultaneously, hands reaching towards their guns.

“Weapons down.”

Mori’s voice boomed across the empty warehouse. The black lizard members froze, before relaxing and letting their arms fall back down.

“Kenjiiiiii…?”

Atsushi appeared behind Kenji. He immediately tensed, his eyes darting around the unfamiliar warehouse. Upon turning around and seeing Kenji, he relaxed, only to freeze all over again as his gaze landed on the Port Mafia.

“Atsushi-San!”

Kenji shouted out happily, skipping towards the former. Atsushi looked at Kenji with a bewildered expression, wondering how this kid wasn’t scared about ten mafiosi staring right at him.

Over the next few moments, Jun’ichirou, Naomi, and Ranpo also appeared. Jun’ichirou instinctively stepped in front of Naomi, while Ranpo calmly pulled out his glasses and began observing the warehouse. While the Tanizaki siblings were being comforted by an enthusiastic Kenji, Atsushi and Ranpo began trying to figure out what was going on.

Yosano appeared beside Kenji a moment later, and Ranpo simply leaned over to whisper something that made Yosano’s eyes narrow. The members of the port mafia all stepped away and closer to each other, glares sent to the way of the agency members, who, save for Kenji, reciprocated the act.

Kunikida appeared, and beside him Dazai. They both looked at the Port Mafia, then the agency members, then at each other.

Everyone froze once they saw Dazai. If he was here…

This wasn’t an ability.

Then…what was it?

Ranpo’s eyes opened to reveal emerald. He strode over to Dazai, grabbed him by the wrist, and pulled him a short distance away from the others. Ranpo started urgently whispering into Dazai’s ear, words spilling from him so quickly that they blurred together, sounding like complete gibberish to everyone else. The latter’s doubtful expression hardened into something more calculating as he responded to Ranpo.

Ranpo nodded once, as though Dazai had confirmed the last missing piece of the puzzle.

‘Freaking Geniuses.’ Everyone had the same thought in mind.

“Okay…”

Dazai said slowly, clearly trying to keep his usual cheer. Ranpo fell into step beside him as they made their way back to the ADA side of the warehouse, standing beside Atsushi.

Only then did Atsushi notice Kyouka and the President were missing from their group. Ranpo glanced at his co-worker then gestured behind him, to where Kyouka was huddled by Yosano while Kunikida was giving Fukuzawa an explanation that somehow sounded both perfectly logical and utterly absurd.

“Kenji, what happened? You just disappeared earlier.”

Kyouka said quietly, clearly tense as being in the same room as her old co-workers. She glanced around the members of the PM, the light in her eyes dimming further as they landed on Kouyou. Their eyes met, and Kyouka looked away at Kenji, waiting for his answer.

(Earlier)

“And that’s how it was! My amazing entrance exam!”

Dazai announced cheerfully as he finished his story. Kunikida stood beside him, wearing a smile that was just a little too fond to hide while Kenji, Atsushi and Kyouka looked awe-struck.

“Woahhhh…wait…you pointed a gun at him, Kunikida-San?”

Atsushi asked innocently, making Kunikida tense as he started spitting out protests. Kenji however, pointed out a different event.

“You both are so sweet! Kunikida saying he couldn’t have asked for a better partner! That’s so cute!”

Kyouka gave a small nod, quietly agreeing with Kenji.

Dazai looked at Kunikida with his signature expression, wearing the all-too-familiar grin that never failed to irritate Kunikida, and spoke loudly.

“Seeeeeeee Kunikidaaa-kunnnnnn~”

Kunikida responded with a swift smack to the back of Dazai’s head.

That’s when Kyouka tugged Dazai’s trenchcoat sleeve, gesturing towards where Kenji stood, now empty.

“Where did he go, Kyouka-Chan?”

Kyouka shrugged, hugging her bunny tighter as she looked around carefully. Then her eyes landed on where Atsushi was standing, only to see he too had disappeared.

Jun’ichirou and Naomi were standing at their desks, but when the trio had looked away then looked back, they too were gone.

“What’s going on? How are they just disappearing? An ability, maybe?”

Kunikida asked, unable to hide the worry creeping into his voice.

Ranpo, who had been sitting on the table enjoying his lollipop, too had vanished. Yosano, who just walked in after an mission, also disappeared. Dazai looked at Kunikida, who was already looking at him.

The next moment, Kunikida vanished before Dazai’s eyes. His eyes widened and before Dazai could look at Kyouka, everything went dark.

The darkness lifted as abruptly as it had come. Dazai blinked once, recognizing the concrete that lay beneath his feet.

Beside him stood a dazed Kunikida. The rest of their missing colleagues were already gathered nearby, all eyes turning toward the pair.

“What the hell are you agency brats doing here?”

Chuuya called out, his gravity activating as a faint red glow, outlining his body as he stepped forward. His gaze landed on Dazai, and his expression immediately hardened into one of fury.

Dazai stared back at him, eyes still with a foreign hesitation. He’s never had to think about what to say when with Chuuya, but this time felt different.

Very different.

“Stupid Mackerel.”

Chuuya muttered under his breath, but Dazai caught it anyway. He sighed, turning towards Ranpo.

“Now what, Ranpo-San?”

Ranpo’s face changed into a grin, eyes opening once more as he turned towards everyone in the warehouse.

“Now, we wait.”

*****************************************

They spread out instinctively, dividing the warehouse into two halves without a single word exchanged.

A quick search of the warehouse revealed little more than empty crates and rusted supplies, none of which were of any use. Eventually, both groups drifted back toward the center, leaving what could only be described as an excessive amount of empty space between them.

They started talking between each other, trying to ignore their literal enemies sitting a couple meters away. With nothing else to do, the Port Mafia attempted to resume ordinary conversation like missions and their everyday rumors, while the ADA members did practically the same as they also discussed missions and status reports.

Ranpo and Dazai sat a little off to the side of the ADA members, clearly discussing something important as they whispered and nodded seriously. Everyone eyed them, but figured there was no point in trying to get an answer out of them.

Suddenly, Chuuya had enough of the dancing around the edge. He got up and pointed a furious hand at the ADA members.

“Alright! That’s enough! One of you agency brats need to explain what the fuck is going on!!”

Gravity bloomed around him once more, outlining his figure in the familiar crimson glow everyone present had long since learned to recognize.

Atsushi stood up, voice carrying a fearful edge as he yelled back at Chuuya.

“We don’t know! We’re just as confused as you are!”

Dazai and Ranpo glanced around, and after one more look at each other, they stood up calmly. Within seconds, both organizations were shouting over one another, accusations and attempted explanations blending into one incomprehensible mess.

Almost simultaneously, Fukuzawa and Mori raised a hand. Silence fell over both organizations.

Before anyone could speak, a breeze drifted through the warehouse.

Heads turned instinctively.

The air had been completely still only moments ago.

The gentle draft quickly strengthened, swirling between both organizations before gathering in the empty space ahead of them. Dust and loose scraps of paper lifted from the concrete, caught within the growing current as it spiraled faster and faster.

Within seconds, the wind condensed into a sphere-like vortex that was suspended midair.

Then…

A sound echoed throughout the warehouse.

It wasn’t loud.

It wasn’t quiet.

It simply…

sounded wrong.

Like reality itself was bending in protest.

The unnatural noise sent a chill down more than one person’s spine.

Instinct overruled hostility.

Without realizing it, members of both the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia edged closer together, eyes fixed on the strange phenomenon before them.

The sphere pulsed.

A washed-out blue light bled through its surface, tiny glowing particles drifting lazily from its edges before dissolving into the air.

It almost resembled…

a portal.

A polished shoe appeared, followed by a figure every member of the Port Mafia knew well.

Same long jet black hair.

Same purple eyes.

Same black trench coat.

Same maroon scarf.

Yet, one thing was different.

His expression.

It wasn’t the cold calculation all the members of the Port Mafia had grown accustomed to, but rather a softened look of concern as he stepped out of the glowing portal.

He looked around—clearly searching for something… or someone—as he fully appeared out of the portal. As he did, it slowly shrank away to nothing at all.

It was gone.

Everyone stared at the Mori that just came out of the portal, but he was looking around frantically, avoiding their faces.

“Kids...?”

He called out worriedly. Only then did he notice the other people in the room with him and his worry seemed to grow.

Behind him, a few feet away, the portal came back, expanding to its earlier size.

Another figure stepped out, a hand already resting on the gun at her hip.

Short purple hair with warm brown streaks, adorned by a familiar golden butterfly clip. Magenta eyes, and the posture of independence. She was showered in port mafia black, wearing a black shirt with a red tie, a knee length skirt also colored the same red, and these black platform ankle boots. A leather jacket hung over her shoulders. Her accessories were gold, a necklace, a chain across her skirt, a ring, a bracelet, the works.

Her expression was one of doubt, but when she saw A!Mori, it softened considerably.

A!Yosano then caught the countless pairs of eyes staring at them. She closed the distance quickly, instinctively pulling out her gun and holding it forward as she stepped slightly in front of A!Mori.

“And who the fuck are-“

The question died on her lips as she met eyes that were hers. She stared at the other version of her, words suddenly caught in her throat.

She cleared her throat, managing to choke out a question.

“What the fuck…are you…me?”

She asked, her gun lowering ever so slightly as the two Yosanos stared at each other.

C!Yosano stumbled backward. Why was this person who looked exactly like her, defending that bastard?

C!Mori couldn’t hide the way his eyes widened. Heads looked between him and this other Mori, but he was more focused on the fact that another Yosano was shielding him.

“Alright. One of you…people…need to give me a fucking answer!”

She was about to add more when her eyes once again met another familiar pair. Wine brown stared straight back at her, and her fierce expression gave way to doubt, and almost, softness?

“You…”

She stared straight at Dazai. His eyes narrowed, trying to figure out why her face changed so much.

But before he could say anything, the portal reappeared, but this time above them all. A figure shot out, landing in front of A!Mori and A!Yosano. He landed in a crouch, one hand straightened to his side and the other holding the ground.

Momentum carried him back a few inches as he slid backward from landing. His breathing was also uneven, like he just finished a hard fight.

The figure looked up, wine brown eyes filled with a determination that melted into confusion when he saw the people in the room. He straightened upwards, and everyone, spare for A!Mori and A!Yosano, gasped in surprise.

The newcomer had brown hair streaked with a dark purple. Bandages decorated his arms and also the lower half of his face, obscuring his mouth. He too was showered in mafia black. A black one-piece outfit that ended into half sleeves. It was a figure hugging kind of spy suit, showing off the slightly muscular build the figure had. Over it was a mid length black leather jacket, and a black pair of sleek shoes. Despite the midnight color he was draped in, speckles of fresh blood could be visible around several parts of him. Silver accessories adorned him, a ring, a chain, and a chain bracelet too. One of his hands was covered with a fingerless glove, that same hand having blood on his knuckles, while his other remained bare with small star tattoos decorating it from his wrist up. A gun rested at his hip, unused despite the obvious signs pointing out that he was in a fight.

His eyes were a wine brown everyone in the room knew too well, and the look they held was the one they’ve seen too much.

He scanned the faces, but before he could process them all, a shout caught his attention.

“‘Samu!”

His head whipped around toward the direction of the familiar sound, features relaxing when he saw A!Yosano and A!Mori.

“Nee-San…”

“Dad…”

A!Yosano ran up to him, checking him for injuries. When making sure there were none, she pulled him into a crushing hug.

A!Mori’s face also lost all its tension when he saw them both embracing.

Dazai hugged Yosano back, patting her back gently as if to calm her.

“I’m fine, Nee-San.”

“And thank goodness for that! You nearly gave me a heart attack!

“I’m sorry...”

“I wasn’t asking for an apology, Osamu.”

She pulled back and cupped his face gently.

“I was just worried about you. As your older sister, it’s my duty to make sure you’re alright.”

“…I know.”

“Good.”

Yosano gently moved his hair and planted a kiss to his forehead, the latter smiling softly in response.

A!Mori’s also stepped forward, resting a hand on A!Dazai’s shoulder, with the former smiling gratefully. Then, remembering where they were, he turned to the countless pairs of eyes ahead of them, all staring with shock and absolute confusion.

“Who are they?”
