Chapter 1: I Double Dog Dare You!

Chapter Text

Green woke up feeling tired. They'd forgotten to go to sleep after practicing messaging their crush all night, and felt a bone deep ache from exhaustion. It wasn't anything new to them, though. If not by a lack of sleep, Green usually felt dead by the time they'd finished work on the farm for the day. You'd think a worm farm would be quite easy, but it truly wasn't. It wasn't even like this was their job, they just did it to help their family. Gods, they'd love to have a regular job.

It sounded ungrateful, since all of Green's friends often complained about their jobs. Green felt quite rude for not enjoying the farm, too. But part of them just wished they were normal. That they hadn't failed royally in school, and could have a normal job, like a normal person. That they didn't work on a dirty farm in the middle of near nowhere, living with every extended family member plausible. That they didn't spend every day dreading it, hoping they could sleep longer and longer, for days and months and disappear. They wished they'd disappear. A better idea was that they'd never come to exist in the first place.

Hm.

That was a depressing train of thought for so early in the morning. Green sighed, lifting themself up to get ready for the day. Before leaving their room, they glanced at a pilot poster on the wall. Cliche, having a poster of your dreams on your bedroom wall. Less like a movie, in that it'd actually never happen.

As they went down into the kitchen, they got their breakfast which was a small portion of cereal, as it always was.

The day was long. Tiring. Green smiled and did their part, occasionally taking small breaks just to breathe. They never really could, though. The whole world felt sort of... stuffy, all the time.

When the day ended, Green retreated back to their room. They were more tired than they'd felt that morning, and more dissociated than usual.

Sleep usually helped.

.

.

.

Green woke up feeling tired. They hadn't slept well last night, an uncomfortable mattress tended to do that.

They had planned to meet up with one of their friends, but couldn't quite bring themself to want to do so. Reaching for their phone, they opened text messages to look over the messages of their plans.

Yellow

this is gonna be so fun I'll make you the BEST coffee you ever tasted

You

okay lol!!!

cant wait

Green felt bad looking over the texts. They did want to hang out, really. They could use the excuse that the game needed help.

You

sososo sorry but I've got a lotta work on the farm today

we can reschedule tho!

That would about do it. Hopefully Yellow wouldn't be too upset.

Without waiting for any reply, Green stood up to get dressed. They threw on the hoodie they wore even when they were sweating, and went outside the help their parents.

By the end of the day, Green still hadn't checked their messages. They didn't want to. Guilt was an annoying thing to feel, but Green felt more dead than guilty. They decided it'd be best to just go to sleep.

.

.

.

Green was getting sick of waking up, really.

They had friends. Good friends, great friends, but it all felt like a chore. Everything dragged on, and nothing felt new. Nothing held the same joy it once did.

Once, when Green had innocently believed in themself. When they'd purely, naively thought they could amount to anything. Now they had paperwork to prove that wrong.

They couldn't be bothered to get up. They needed to help with the farm, but they were just so tired, tired of everything.

After a while of lying in their own self loathing, Green finally dragged themself out of bed. Only because they heard their younger siblings do something probably devious outside their room.

As expected, three of Green's siblings were playing tag inside, sliding down the stairs to get away from each other, and promptly getting splinters.

Green sighed, but they'd all disappeared already, so they just went to go outside.

Upon opening the door, though, Green was met with Red, who stumbled after knocking on air. Red fumbled to stand up and cleared their throat, grinning to regain their dignity.

"Hello, Green!"

Green squinted at them, then took their phone from their pocket to see if they'd had a message or anything. Nope. Well, aside from a response from Yellow.

Looking back up at Red, Green spoke. "Hi. So... any reason for the surprise visit?"

"Ah, yes, of course. See- ...uh." Red seemed a little embarrassed, but soon continued, "Wanna be my plus one to a fancy party event?"

That was unexpected. Not that Red was going to a fancy party event, they were a high class pilot and went to these things every so often. Mostly when their company invited them to one for publicity, or whatever. Not that Red was the best representative to send. The surprising part was them inviting Green. They always went to these things with Purple, their best friend. It left Green a bit... perplexed.

"What happened to Purple?" Green asked curiously.

Red sighed, though, their face flushing red. "I kinda forgot to ask them and now they're busy..."

Green choked back a laugh at that. "Well, sure. I've got nothing going on. When is it?"

"Thank you, Green! It's like, half an hour from now, no biggie."

"WHAT?!"

They rushed back inside, navigating past their siblings so they could get ready.

Green put on their best clothes, which- weren't actually the best. They didn't own a suit or anything, so they put on a plain button up shirt and a green cardigan. It didn't look the best, but Green figured it would be fine.

Fancy events weren't really their thing - for obvious reasons. It'd add something interesting to their day, at least.

Making their way to the door again, Green poked their head into the kitchen to try find their parents, which they couldn't.

"Sage, would you mind passing along that I've gone out with my friend?"

"Sure, have fun." Their sibling replied without looking up from the food they were cooking.

Green smiled, and made their way back to Red.

Red called them an Uber to get to the place - some rich person's house. In the way there, Green finally checked their phone, to see the message from Yellow.

Yellow

that's fine lol what about tomorrow?

Hah, now Green felt extra guilty.

You

hey sorrryyyy I got a last minute invite to an event with Red ToT

Yellow responded quickly, even though they were supposed to be working.

Yellow

little shit

what event is it?

You

idk

fancy

Yellow

I dare you to try and hook up with the richest capitalist you can find.

...well, that was certainly something.

Yellow

sorry Brown stole my phone

but yeah we dare you

Green thought of what to type for a minute, completely bewildered. Seriously? They were daring them to hook up with a rich person? That'd be something dumb to do.

Red seemed to notice how Green was just staring at their phone, and looked over their shoulder. Once they'd read the message, they laughed loudly, startling Green from their thoughts.

"HAH! Hahaha! Oh- oh that's good. I double dog dare you to do it, pal. Heh, that'd be priceless."

Green's face went slightly red, and they tried to cover it with their cardigan.

"I'm not hooking up with a rich person! That'd be so weird!" They countered, but Red had already snatched their phone off of them.

Green tsked, taking it back, but Red had already replied to Yellow and Brown.

You

They absolutely will trust me!!!!!! -Red

Switching off their phone, Green groaned.

"This isn't happening, I hope you know."

"Oh, it will!" Red snickered.

The two friends got to the location in about twenty minutes. The place looked big, much bigger than Green was used to with anything. It almost felt a little intimidating.

Red lead Green over to the entrance, where they gave someone their ticket. The ticket itself looked like it cost a lot of money. Jeez, some people really could just throw out beans on insignificant pieces of paper like it meant nothing. Oh, how Green envied them.

"C'mon, Greenie. We've gotta go inside sometime today."

Green realised they'd been staring at the door for a while, and smiled nervously.

"Right- let's go."

Going inside didn't help much for Green's staring problem; it felt bigger inside. There were so many people in expensive, pristine suits, all chatting to each other with a glass of wine that cost more than Green's whole village had collectively. All of the fancy outfits made Green feel a tad underdressed, so they did take off their hat in modesty.

One other thing - Red had apparently forgotten to tell Green just how 'fancy' this fancy event was. Everywhere they looked, they saw literal famous people. The type of people that earned enough to live wealthily for five lifetimes, and got it from one interview.

Needless to say, Green was very out of place there. They even wondered how Red got invited, given that they weren't too publicly famous.

"Hmm... where to go first..." Red pondered aloud.

The first place they had to go was out f the way, however, when someone scoffed from behind them and agitatedly walked around them.

They found their way over to the drinks table, and Red poured them both a glass of wine. Green didn't drink wine often, but they knew that it usually tasted bad. But hey, maybe if they got wine drunk they wouldn't feel so awkward.

"So, are we meant to talk to people?" Green asked, genuinely stumped on what to do there.

"That's usually what you do at parties, yes," Red replied.

Luckily, someone came up to them first. Someone in a dark blue suit, smiling too wide, like they weren't really enjoying anything. Or they were just too stuck up to talk to people.

"Greetings! You must be Red, correct?" They greeted. Their voice was definitely a facade of some sort.

"Ah! Yup! You're Navy, right? It's a pleasure."

Red had some sort of ability to always stay chill (even when the situation didn't call for it).

Navy turned to look Green up and down, seemingly judgementally, but their smile never dropped.

"And who's... this?"

"Oh, I'm Green! It's an honour, Mx."

They turned back to Red, speaking as if Green was a sort of pet to be gawked at.

"What place do they have- here?"

"Well, they're my plus one, of course," Red said cheerfully.

"Mhm. I haven't heard of them before."

Red and Green both simultaneously realised that Navy hadn't wondered why they were there, but why they were there.

"They help to managed and run a family owned business. It's very famous, I'm surprised you haven't heard of them before." Red lied smoothly.

Green stared at Red for a moment, silently questioning why the heck they'd just done that. There was frankly no need to, and now they'd have to keep up the lie.

Though, Navy's face did seem to get a little more interested.

"I see, I see."

The conversation dragged on for about two hours, with Green ultimately spacing out, and only zoning in whenever they heard their own name be called, which wasn't often. When it did happen, they'd pour themself some more wine. It was easier to stay out of conversation if you were consistently sipping a drink, rather than just staying quiet.

When Navy left, someone else came over to talk to them. And it went on in that routine for a long, long time.

One thing Red had left out of their run down of this party was that it would last all day. So it was about 10pm, and Green had drank more glasses of wine than they had purebred to count. At some point they realised that Red had disappeared from beside them.

Desperately looking around, Green saw them on the complete other side of the too-large room, talking to random people Green couldn't even recognise.

Well, that was clearly bad. Not to mention the growing fuzziness in their head from how much wine they'd had. Maybe they should've thought more carefully about the wine.

In an attempt to ease their pounding head, Green closed their eyes and put their fingers to their temple. The noise from the room was still irritatingly loud, though.

Green quickly gave up on this method, opening their eyes again and just taking mother sip of wine. If they got drunk enough the effects would probably counter themselves, right? Hopefully. They didn't know how alcohol worked.

While looking around, Green saw someone walking their way. They hoped that the person wasn't actually walking their way, and would turn to someone else, but they didn't.

Green got tense, trying to plan out what to say when they came over, but they couldn't string words together properly even in their head. This was so bad. And they kept walking closer!

When they finally got up to the drinks table, they- oh. They were just getting some wine. Well, that made sense.

Green let out a sigh, and moved their arms to lean back on the table. Their judgment of distance was clearly lost, because they completely missed and fell flat on the floor.

That made the person stare at them. Yeah, Green was getting tired of these judgmental stares.

They picked themself up, leaning on the table. Maybe the alcohol had ruined their social filter, because they couldn't help but lock eyes with the person just staring at them.

"I'm fine! No need to ask," Green said sarcastically.

The person's stare didn't waver, unfortunately. Though, they did speak.

"Who... are you?" They asked, looking them up and down.

Green didn't truly have the energy to stay annoyed. It had never been their nature to be rude, and again, that feature was tripled by their drunken state of mind.

"I'm Green," they responded.

"Hm. Why are you here?"

...

"And you are...?"

They seemed bewildered, like they'd never been asked that before.

"White. I'm sure you've seen me before."

"Oh! I think I have."

White stood still for a moment, and Green realised they were probably waiting for them to answer their previous question.

"I came here with Red, are their plus one. I think they're over there somewhere."

"And why you, may I ask?"

"Ah, well-" well, Red's an idiot that forgot to ask their partner to go. That was the obvious answer. Green did, in that moment, remember what Red had said earlier. About a 'family owned business' or something. A little lying never hurt - maybe it'd be fun and they'd regret it in the morning. But the main part of that sentence was that it'd be fun!

"Well... I run a family owned business," Green declared with a certainty that only a liar or a politician could have.

"Is that right? I've not heard of you before." White replied, seeming much more interested now.

It seemed that when rich people heard 'family owned business' they didn't think of small business farms, but rather corporate businesses.

"I doubt you would have, my parents are very private people."

Green was getting the hang of this path of lying. It was easy to twist their words about their farm, to not exactly be lying outright.

"So you said your friend left you?" White asked, smirking.

"Yeah, they did."

"Well I suppose I could guide you around for a while. You do seem awfully intoxicated."

White did have a point there - Green felt terrible. However, they didn't seem any better themself. Their cheeks were flushed and they had a sway in their step. Green couldn't bring themself to care, though. Not when they felt their own cheeks heating up.

Green bit their lip momentarily. Was this a bad idea? Surely not, White seemed so kind.

The two of them ended up going around the place together, both holding a glass of wine - albeit White holding their's much more elegantly.

Over the time they spent together, Green had managed to connect the dots in the back of their mind. The dots that spelt out White was flirting with Green. Staying close, making hopeful or grateful comments. White was trying to get Green to go home with them. And Green would be lying if they said it wasn't working. They'd had a crush before, and though they didn't know White all that much, fit felt similar. It made them feel warmer, but it was familiar.

...They didn't quite know when they'd left the mansion.

Green was in some sort of taxi - much too posh to be a taxi, but something taxi adjacent. White sat beside them, arm slung over their shoulder to pull them close. Green's face was definitely red, even if they couldn't see it. It matched with White, they guessed.

After blinking just once, Green was in a bed. If they had any more awareness of their surroundings, they'd be marvelling at how big the room they were in was. All their focus was on the shirtless crewmate in front of them, though. Looking to the side, Green faintly saw two backpacks on the floor, and their own cardigan. When had that happened?

It didn't matter when they felt lips press to their's, gasping before eagerly returning the motion.

Despite that they couldn't remember when, they knew they'd probably asked for this, or agreed at least. White felt so good on top of them, being so gentle and yet just rough enough to make Green let out eager noises.

Green was sure they'd blacked out. The seconds before that, they had enough conscience to acknowledge they were still wrapped in White's arms, more soft than prior, as White was now spooning them.

Huh.

They made a note to thank Red for inviting them. That'd be a thought lost in the morning, like all of this.

Red looked around frantically. They'd been pacing, and had begged to be allowed to look around before they got kicked out.

Shit.

They'd lost Green.
