Work Text:

Kai loved partying.

The bass of the loud music bumping under his feet, seeping into his bones. Sweet, alcoholic cocktails flowing around the stiff and dark room, with the only light source being the ridiculous disco ball on the ceiling. Couples making out in every corner. Being a college student, this was a dream come true for Kai every single weekend. He loved this.

Damon didn't think so. For him, parties were stupid. A waste of time. He was sweating most of the time from the nerves and Kai being so close. People were everywhere. If he was in his right mind, he would never attend a frat party, like he usually did. But tonight.. they were fresh out of the finals, and Kai used his dumb puppy eyes on Damon. Again. Kai knew he couldn't say no to that.

So, Kai decided to let Damon scowl at nothing in a corner. He was no fun anyways. And after hours of partying and hanging around, just while Kai was taking enough photos to fill his entire gallery and social media accounts, the last person he expected to see, the Eva Tsunaka, was approaching him. They weren't exactly friends, and he only knew about her because of her friendship with Damon. In fact, he found the mathlete a bit unsettling since she was brooding all the time.

Kai put on his friendliest smile, ready to greet Eva and maybe have a little chat with her. He was ready to tease her about 'looking like a stoic statue at a frat party'. That was, until he saw a molten Damon leaning heavily against her. Kai's eyes widened comically at the sight.

Damon was... wasted. His most-of-the-time perfectly styled blonde hair was now messy and tousled, looking like fluffy cotton candy. His eyes were glassy and half-lidded, as if he was halfway through sleeping on his feet. Even his clothes were wrinkled, his tie loosened. Eva was keeping him steady by holding his shoulders, an exasperated look on her face as she dragged him towards Kai.

Kai gulped. He looked so fucking cute.

As Eva stopped in front of him with a sigh, he cleared his throat, blinking at her. “Eva? Is he... drunk or something?" Eva pressed her lips into a thin line and dropped Damon right into Kai's arms. Kai nearly staggered back a step at the unexpected weight of Damon in his arms as he watched Eva dust off her hands like a laborer who has finished her work. "Apparently, yeah. You should probably take care of your boyfriend. He looks like he'll puke any second. Take him to your room or something. Tell him to call me when he wakes up, yeah?"

"He's not my—"

Eva was already turning to leave. "Diana's probably waiting for me, so I should go. Goodnight, Kai."

Kai was offended and flabbergasted and angry. Eva was just going to leave him with a drunk Damon!? He was her friend too and Damon probably hated him."Hell, Eva, you can't just—"

"Mhn."

At the sound of a moan, Kai looked down with wide eyes to see Damon nuzzling his face against his neck, his eyes glassy. “She's riiiight. I want my bed…”

Kai fought the urge to laugh, clearing his throat as he steadied Damon, ready to take him to their room. “Okay, grumpy. Though you're not so grumpy right now…”

The walk to their room was not as funny as Kai thought it would be. Damon was slender, but being drunk and sleepy made him a dead weight in his arms. Kai was practically dragging him through the stairs as they ran into non other than Jett. Thanks to the built-up man’s help, Kai managed to carry him upstairs.

After reaching their dorm, Kai unlocked the door to their shared room, dropping Damon onto the couch. He exhaled, wiping sweat off of his brow. Damon sat down with a frown, crossing his arms over his chest to look serious, even though he looked like a petulant child. “See, Kai?! I can get loose and get drunk too.”

Kai chuckled. “I never said you couldn't. I just thought you were… more strict than that.”

“In a spoilsport way?"

“No! Like… in a… having-a-stick-up-your-ass way, if that makes sense.”

Damon scowled harder. “No it doesn't! Also, my head hurts.”

“Probably because you're scowling too hard,” Kai said with a grin, sitting down next to his roommate. Damon looked away, sliding towards Kai. He then turned his head towards him, searching his face. Kai raised a brow. “Do you need something? Water, or…?”

"No," he replied, still frowning.

Kai sighed. "Why did you even drink that much? I doubt if this is healthy."

"To prove you wrong. I'm not a coward."

Kai almost laughed. "Prove me wrong? You seriously—"

Damon’s scowl broke as he leaned closer, his breath brushing Kai’s face. “Do you have makeup on your face?”

Kai blinked, a little flustered by his sudden question. “Yeah..? Why?”

Damon shrugged, and Kai tried to ignore the blush on his face, the heaviness of his breathing. “Suits you.”

“Oh? Thanks, grumpy. You wouldn't say that in a hundred years if you were sober. Guess I should get you drunk more often.”

“Shut up,” Damon mumbled, leaning even closer. The sudden proximity made Kai's breath hitch, his heart feeling heavy in his chest. He swallowed hard, trying to ignore Damon's eyes staring at his mouth.

He couldn't kiss Damon while he was drunk, right? It would be taking advantage of him. Hell, he would kill him once he was awake and sober. Then why was he staring at his lips? Why was his face red? And what were his hands doing on his waist!?

Before he could think logically and push him away, Damon lunged forward. Kai closed his eyes firmly, ready to feel Damon’s plush and soft lips against his—

But instead of kissing him like Kai wished thought, Damon just… sighed softly and collapsed against Kai, causing him to fall onto his back on the couch with Damon laying on top of him. Like a goddamn cat. Kai opened his eyes wide, arms hanging in the air as if he was unsure whether to hold Damon back or not.

“You smell… really sweet. Like cherry. Or cupcakes. It's stupid,” Damon mumbled against his chest, squeezing him tight. “... can we stay like this?”

Kai sighed, the corner of his lips stretching into a smile as he lowered his hand. One hand sliding up and down on Damon's back soothingly, while the other slid into his hair, nails scratching his scalp. He could swear he heard Damon purr at it. “We can, if you promise you won't kill me tomorrow. Y’know, sober Damon is really evil and grumpy.”

Damon frowned, but it was more out of clinginess rather than annoyance. “I don't care. I want to sleep like this. I… I won't say anything tomorrow, okay? Please?”

Kai chuckled, hearing him plead. “Wish i could record this. Your softness is going to waste.”

Damon blushed. “You're here to witness it.”

Kai laughed harder, tugging at his hair. “I love this side of you.”

"You do?”

“I love you, actually.”

Damon blushed harder, pressing a kiss against Kai’s neck. “I love you too.”

Kai blushed too, his smirk turning to something softer. His voice was low, almost intimate as he spoke again. “How am I supposed to know if this is alcohol talking or not?”

Damon stopped planting kisses against his neck and jaw, raising his head to face him. “By confessing to me when I'm sober.” He laid his head back against his chest, closing his eyes peacefully. He looked younger like this, Kai thought amidst his inner confusion and surprise at Damon's words.

He took a deep breath, laying down and closing his eyes just like him. “Goodnight,” he mumbled.

“... night.”

Kai smiled, his mind spiraling with giddiness and images of a particular blond grumpy cat until sleep took over.
